Abington Drops Conference Match at St. Mary’s

St. Mary's City, Md. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team dropped a United East Conference (UEC) contest at St. Mary's College (Md.) by the score of 7-1 on Friday afternoon at Somerset Tennis Courts.  The match was called before full competition due to rain.

How It Happened
 
* Abington grabbed its lone point at first doubles as the duo of senior Elizabeth Turner and freshman Laurie Flemming came away with an 8-5 victory over Giselle Harris and Cleopatra Solomon.  Turner and Flemming jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the match before Harris and Solomon rallied to tie the score at 5-5.  However, Turner and Flemming bounced back to win the next three games to take the match, 8-5.
 
* St. Mary's earned the points at second and third doubles to led 2-1 heading into singles play.  The Seahawks won at second doubles, 8-1, and received the point at third doubles by default.
 
* In singles action, senior Taylor LaPage went the distance against Melak Armstrong at fifth singles.  LaPage won the first set, 6-1.  However, Armstrong went on to take the next two sets by the score of 6-1 and 6-3 to win the match.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the fifth meeting between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2021-22 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 0-5 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Sunday, April 7 as the Nittany Lions host Clarks Summit University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.
