Abington Overpowers Defenders on Senior Day

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team defeated visiting Clarks Summit University, 9-0, in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on Senior Day. Prior to the match, the Nittany Lions honored seniors Taylor LaPage, Elisa Steinhardt and Elizabeth Turner in part of Senior Day festivities.
 
How It Happened
 
* Abington opened the match with three doubles victories.  The team of Turner and freshman Laurie Flemming won their first doubles match with an 8-0 shutout.  At third doubles, LaPage and junior Isabella DePorre picked up with the victory by the score of 8-2.
 
* Steinhardt and sophomore Soniyah Youngblood went to a tiebreak in their second doubles match against Rachael Chastain and Ella Simmons.  Steinhardt and Youngblood won three straight points to take a 5-2 lead in the tiebreak.  The Clarks Summit duo quickly tied it at 5-5 before Abington won the next two points to take the match.
 
* In singles action, Flemming trailed her first singles match against Naomi Sadowitz 3-1 in the first set.  However, Flemming would go on to win 11 straight games to take the match in straight sets by the scores of 6-3 and 6-0.
 
* Turner won her second singles match against Melanie Stabler in straight sets by identical 6-2 scores.

* Steinhardt closed out her third singles match against Simmons with a shutout in the second set winning 6-0.  She won the first set, 6-4.
 
* DePorre notched the win at fifth singles as she defeated Chastain in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
 
* LaPage also won in straight sets as she took care of Lydia Stanley at sixth singles by the score of 6-1, 6-2.
 
* Youngblood was credited with the win at fourth singles by forfeit.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the second meeting between Abington and Clarks Summit.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-1 versus the Defenders in the all-time series.  Clarks Summit won the first-ever meeting last year.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday, April 11 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Harrisburg in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
