Abington Sweeps Chargers; Fillman & Milward Each with Home Runs

Jenkintown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team swept the three-game United East Conference (UEC) series against visiting Lancaster Bible College with a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park.  The Nittany Lions took the opener, 4-0, before senior Montana Milward delivered a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the ninth in game two to give Abington a 3-2 victory.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* A two-run first inning home run by senior Shane Fillman was all the offense the Nittany Lions would need on a day that the Chargers were held to just two hits in the game. 
 
* Abington added a run in the fifth thanks to a run scoring single by senior Sean Doherty.  The Nittany Lions tacked on another run in the sixth after a sacrifice fly by junior Josh McGee score Fillman who led the inning off with a double.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
 
* Margot went six innings for his longest outing of the year.  He held the Chargers to just two hits while tying his season-high with seven strikeouts. 
 
* Freshman Logan Woodward, who pitched two perfect innings to close out Friday's victory, pitched a scoreless seventh. 
 
* Fillman finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.  His first inning home run marked his third of the season.
 
* Senior Josh Barr also had an extra-base hit in the game as he went 1-for-2 with a fifth inning double.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Owen Shimmel had the two hits in the game as he went 2-for-3.  Brian Greenly reached base three times with three walks.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Milward launched a solo home run over the right field fence in the bottom of the ninth to give the Nittany Lions the three-game series sweep of the Chargers with a 3-2 victoty. Milward's walk-off homer came with two outs in the inning.
 
* Earlier in the game, the Nittany Lions broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Fillman and junior Jake Fallers had back-to-back two-out run scoring hits. 
 
* In the sixth the Chargers tied the game with two runs of their own.  Lancaster Bible took advantage of two throwing errors by the Nittany Lions in the inning.  Thade Hauge had an RBI single in the inning. 
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
 
* Milward's walk-off homer marked his fourth home run of the season; one shy of his career-high that he set a year ago.  He finished the game 1-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
 
* Junior Owen Lynch earned the victory after pitching three scoreless innings of relief.  Lynch held the Chargers to just two hits in his relief outing.
 
* Freshman James Torpey started the game and went a season-high six innings as he limited the Chargers to five hits and two unearned runs.  He finished with five strike outs.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Evan Sareyka went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Blake Greenly went seven innings allowing four hits and two unearned runs while striking out seven batters in a no-decision. Greenly also went 1-for-3 at the plate with two walks.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 30th and 31st matchup between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 25-6 versus the Chargers in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 9 as the Nittany Lions travel down to Maryland to face St. Mary's College in a rescheduled United East contest.  Game time is set for 2 p.m.  The Nittany Lions and the Seahawks will play two games on Tuesday with the first game counting as the makeup conference contest.  Game two will be designated as a non-conference game.
