Abington Splits Doubleheader with Seahawks

St. Mary's City, Md. – The Penn State Abington baseball team split a doubleheader at St. Mary's College on Tuesday afternoon at the Hawks Nest.  The Nittany Lions took the most important of the two games with a 13-11 victory in the United East Conference (UEC) matchup which was rescheduled from March.  Game two was designated as a non-conference game in which the Seahawks won by the score of 4-3.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* In the opener, both teams combined for 24 runs and 30 hits with runs scored in every inning except the sixth and seventh frames.
 
* Abington trailed 6-1 after the Seahawks scored three runs in each the first and second innings.  The Nittany Lions got on the board in the top of the second thanks to a run scoring double by senior Montana Milward
 
* The Nittany Lions made it a two-run game in the third after scoring three runs.  Three straight hits to start the inning by Sean Doherty, Shane Fillman and Jake Fallers set the tone.  Fallers registered an RBI base hit and Fillman later scored on a fielding error by the Seahawks. The third run of the inning came across when freshman Donato Incollingo hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Fallers.
 
* St. Mary's added a run in the bottom of the third to increase its lead to 7-4.  However, in the top half of the sixth the Nittany Lions erupted for six runs to grab their first lead of the game.  Freshman Gabe Marrero hit a two-run home run to make the score 7-6 before back-to-back two-run doubles later in the inning by Incollingo and Milward gave Abington a 10-7 advantage.
 
* The Seahawks came within one run of the lead after scoring two runs in the fifth.  The home team tied the game in the eighth with an RBI by George Berbakos.
 
* Abington responded in the top half of the ninth and took advantage of two costly errors by the Seahawks.  Senior Eric Rollins drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Fallers who reached base on a fielding error.  With runners now at first and second, senior Josh Baar singled to left field to drive in junior Josh McGee.  Incollingo also scored on the play as the ball got by the left fielder.
 
* The Seahawks managed a single run in the bottom of the ninth after Trevor Smith drove in Eli Shafer with a double.  Junior Coleby Lopatic retired the next two batters to hold off any further damage and seal the victory. Lopatic was credited with the save; his first in an Abington uniform.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
 
* Marrero's two-run homer in the fourth was the first of his career.  He finished the game 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI.  He also walked twice in the game.
 
* Incollingo and Milward each led the team with three RBI.  Incollingo finished 2-for-5 with three runs and three RBI, while Milward went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two doubles.
 
* Doherty finished the game 3-for-6 with two runs.
 
* Fillman totaled a game-high four hits in six at-bats.  He also scored twice.
 
* Junior Owen Lynch (2-1) pitched six innings of relief and earned the win; his second in his last two appearances. He struck out two batters and held the Seahawks to just three runs.
 
* For St. Mary's, Cole Tarleton went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Adrian Auber finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two the Nittany Lions trailed 4-1 heading into the final inning of the seven-inning game.  Milward led the inning off with a single and then Rollins followed with a walk.  Three batters later, Doherty reached on an infield hit to load the bases.  Fillman stepped to the plate and connected on a base hit to center field that drove in two runs to bring Abington to within one run of tying the game at 4-3. 
 
* With the tying run 90-feet away, the Seahawks Ryder Chalk retired the next batter on a ground out close out the game and register a complete game performance.
 
* Abington scored the game's first run with an RBI single by Fallers.
 
* St. Mary's tied the game in the second with a run scoring double by Aaron Wathen.  Later in the game Tartleton had a run scoring single in the fifth and drove in a pair in the sixth with a double. 
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
 
* Doherty and Fallers each went 2-for-4 in the game.
 
* Fillman finished 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
 
* Senior Brandon Hightower struck out four batters in four innings of work.
 
* For St. Mary's, Tarleton went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Chalk (2-4) earned the win as he went seven innings while striking out five.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth and 10th matchups between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2022 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 6-4 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, April 12 as the Nittany Lions begin a three-game United East series at Penn College.  Game time for Friday's single game is set for 3 p.m.
