Abington Sweeps Chargers in United East Doubleheader

Lancaster, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team completed a two-game sweep at Lancaster Bible College on Saturday afternoon in a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader as the Nittany Lions came away with an 8-0 victory in the opener and a 9-4 triumph in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* In the opener, junior Gretchen Yanss stifled the Chargers' offence holding them to just two hits in a six-inning game.  Yanss struck out a season-high nine batters on her way to her fourth shutout of the season.
 
* Abington scored a pair of first inning runs with freshman Ava Livingston highlighting the inning with a two-out two-run single.
 
* The Nittany Lions added a run in the third when sophomore Emily Foxhill scored on a wild pitch after leading the inning off with a walk. 
 
* Abington broke the game open with a five-run frame in the sixth.  Four different players drove in runs, including a two-run two-out triple by freshman Marlena Hacker.  With the Nittany Lions ahead 8-0, after Yanss retired the side in order the game was called due to the eight-run mercy rule.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
 
* Yanss went the distance as she picked up her fifth victory of the season.  It also marked her eighth complete game. 
 
* Hacker finished the game 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI.  She also walked to reach base four times.
 
* Junior Callie Chambers went 2-for-3 with a run and a double.
 
* Freshman Victoria Butler scored twice and was 1-for-3 at the plate with a triple.
 
* Freshman Rylee Albany had multiple hits in the game as she went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. 
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Alyssa Hamilton and Carleigh Cleland each went 1-for-2 in the game.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, the Nittany Lions once again jumped out to an early lead as Abington plated three runs in the opening inning.  Livingston and freshman Isabella Antosiewicz each had run scoring hits in the inning.
 
* Lancaster Bible got a run back in the bottom of the inning and went on to score single runs in the second and third innings to tie the game at 3-3.
 
* Abington regained the lead in the top half of the fifth after junior Drew Liss singled to right field scoring Yanss to make the score 4-3. 
 
* The Nittany Lions locked up the victory with a five-run seventh inning that featured seven hits.  Foxhill and freshman Sara Slimm each drove in a run in the inning, while Albany brought home two runners with a triple.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
 
* Antosiewicz finished with four hits in the game tying her season-high.  She went 4-for-5 at the plate with a run and an RBI. 
 
* Junior Hailey Gamble went 3-for-5, while Livingston finished 2-for-5 with an RBI.
 
* Albany had the team's lone extra base hit with her seventh inning triple as she finished 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
 
* Hacker also had multiple hits in the game as she went 2-for-5 with two runs.
 
* Freshman Danielle Procopio picked up her first career victory as she pitched five innings of relief.  She held the Chargers to four hits and one earned run.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Hamilton finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.  She had two extra base hits with a double and a third inning solo home run that tied the game at 3-3. Hamilton also pitched a complete seven inning game with four strikeouts.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 31st and 32nd match ups between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2014 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 25-7 versus the Chargers in the all-time series. Abington has won the last seven games in the series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Sunday, April 7 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Harrisburg in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 1 p.m. at Huntingdon Field.
