Abington Splits with Harrisburg in United East Doubleheader

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team split its United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader with visiting Penn State Harrisburg on Sunday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  Harrisburg took the opener, 5-3, in eight innings while Abington salvaged the doubleheader with a 5-2 victory in the night cap.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Harrisburg jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Maddy Lehigh led off with a triple to right-center field.  Cara Biesecker followed with a hit to center field to score Lehigh.
 
* The score remained 1-0 in favor of the visitors until the bottom of the third when Abington took a 2-1 lead thanks to a two-run single by freshman Marlena Hacker.  Sophomore Emily Foxhill led the inning off with a walk and then freshman Victoria Butler followed with a base hit to left.  Freshman Isabella Antosiewicz dropped down a sacrifice bunt, but Harrisburg failed to register an out as all three runners were safe setting the stage for Hacker's run scoring hit.
 
* In the top of the seventh Harrisburg tied the game at 2-2 to force extra innings when Elaina Gates connected on a two-out pinch-hit double to left field scoring Jocelyn Bennett who also pinch hit in the inning.  Bennett reached on a base hit.
 
* In the extra frame, Harrisburg pushed through three runners to take a 5-2 lead.  Lehigh highlighted the inning with a two-run triple. 
 
* Abington was able to get one of the runs back in the bottom of the eighth when junior Gretchen Yanss scored freshman Breanna Patierno on a sacrifice fly.  As the inning progressed Abington had the winning run at the plate but Harrisburg was able to retire the final batter leaving two runners stranded on base.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
 
* Yanss went the full eight innings for Abington as she struck out eight batters; one shy of her season-high that she set on Saturday at Lancaster Bible College. 
 
* Hacker had two of the team's five hits as she finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI.
 
* Butler reached base three times as she went 1-for-2 with a run and two walks.
 
* For Harrisburg, Lehigh was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two triples, two runs and two RBI. Mackenzie Sawdey won her ninth game of the year as she went eight innings and struck out 11.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* A five-run third inning turned out to be the difference in game two.  Abington took advantage of three fielding blunders by Harrisburg in the inning.  The Nittany Lions scored three of their five runs on errors.  Yanss drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, while junior Callie Chambers scored the inning's final run on a passed ball.
 
* Harrisburg spoiled Abington's shutout bid with a run in the fifth inning off a run scoring hit by Biesecker.  Harrisburg tacked on another run in the sixth with Emma Einarson recording an RBI single to make the score 5-2.
 
* In the seventh, Harrisburg had the potential tying run at the plate with two outs and runners on second and third.  However, freshman Danielle Procopio forced a ground out for the final putout of the game to secure the victory.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
 
* Casale picked up her fifth victory of the season as she went six innings holding Harrisburg to just two runs on six hits.  She also struck out three batters in the win.
 
* Procopio pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn her first career save.
 
* Butler and Chambers had the two Abington hits.  Butler went 1-for-4 with a run, while Chambers finished 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
 
* For Harrisburg, Gates went 2-for-4 with a run, while Lehigh went 1-for-3 with a walk.  Lehigh led the game off with her third triple on the day.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 26th and 27th matchups between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 12-15 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, April 10 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Gallaudet University in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is slated for 3 p.m.
