Abington Cruises to Victory on Senior Day

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team came away with a 9-0 victory against Clarks Summit University in a United East Conference (UEC) match on Sunday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.  Prior to the match, the Nittany Lions recognized seniors Neil Guarino and Josh Kurek in part of Senior Day festivities.

How It Happened
 
* In doubles play, the Nittany Lions dropped just one game between all three competitions to outscore the Defenders, 24-1.  Kurek and freshman Wenxu Gu won at first doubles, 8-1, while Guarino and sophomore Belotserkovsky won their second doubles match, 8-0.  Sophomore Nick Talarico and freshman Tripp Mangifesta also posted a shutout with an 8-0 win at third doubles.
 
* In singles play, Mangifesta and freshman AJ Abdullah posted shutout victories in their respective matches.  Mangifesta posted the win at third singles, while Abdullah recorded his first collegiate win at sixth singles.
 
* Kurek won his first singles match against Harrison Michel in straight sets by identical 6-2 scores. 
 
* Guarino posted the win at second singles over Michael Spotts by the scores of 6-2 and 6-4.
 
* At fourth singles, Talarico won in straight sets against Toby Hvizdak.  He won the first set with a 6-0 shutout before closing out the match with a 6-3 victory in set two.
 
* Sophomore Adrian Schembri won his fifth singles match against Ben Chadwick with a 6-0 victory in set one.  Schembri then clinched the win with a 6-1 victory in set two.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Clarks Summit since the start of the 2012 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-0 versus the Defenders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday, April 11 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Harrisburg in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
