Abington Falls to Chargers to Begin United East Tournament

Middletown, Pa. – The second-seeded Penn State Abington baseball team dropped its United East Conference (UEC) Tournament game to third-seeded Lancaster Bible College by the score of 16-3 on Friday afternoon at the Penn State Harrisburg Baseball Field.  Harrisburg, the top-seed in the Volt Division, served as host of the four-team double-elimination tournament. Abington will now face fourth-seeded St. Mary's College (Md.) in an elimination game on Saturday morning.  First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.

How It Happened
 
* A 10-run first inning by the Chargers turned out to be the difference in the game.  Lancaster Bible sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning and registered seven hits and four walks.  Evan Sareyka had a two-run home run in the inning, while Blake Greenly highlighted the frame with a grand slam home run to cap the scoring.
 
* Abington spoiled the shutout bid for the Chargers with its first run in the bottom of the fourth.  Junior Josh McGee drove in senior Shane Fillman with a double to left field.  Fillman led the inning off with a base hit.
 
* The Nittany Lions scored another run in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff home run by senior Montana Milward to make the score 12-2.  Abington scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh when freshman Gabe Marrero connected on a two-out single to right field to score junior Josh Henderson.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Fillman finished the game 2-for-4 with a run, while junior Jake Fallers went 2-for-3 with a walk.
 
* Milward's fifth inning home run marked his ninth of the season and his third in his last four games.
 
* For the Chargers, Greenly went 3-for-3 at the plate with five runs and six RBI.  He also walked four times. Harrison Hobdy finished 2-for-6 with two runs and four RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 34th meeting between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2011 season. The Nittany Lions are now 26-8 versus the Chargers in the all-time series.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions are making their 12th trip to the United East Tournament and eighth straight with the exception of the 2020 season when the tournament was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Abington is now 15-21 in the postseason with championship game appearances in 2019, 2021 and 2022.  The team won the title in 2019.
