Abington Falls in Extra Innings to Top-Seeded Harrisburg

Middletown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat in extra innings on day one of the United East Conference (UEC) Volt Division Tournament against top-seeded and host Penn State Harrisburg on Friday morning at the Harrisburg Softball Field. Abington will now face the loser of the #2 Penn College/#3 Penn State Berks game in an elimination game later this afternoon with anticipated first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.

How It Happened
 
* Abington scored the game's first run in the top half of the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie that forced extra innings.  With a runner starting the inning at second base, sophomore Emily Foxhill ripped a base hit down the left field line to score freshman Sara Slimm.

* In the bottom of the eighth, Harrisburg responded with a run scoring hit off the bat of Lauren Hess to tie the score at 1-1 to push the game to the ninth.
 
* Both teams loaded the bases in their respective at-bats but neither side was able to push a run across.  Another scoreless inning followed bringing the game to the 11th.  Abington went down in order in the top half of the inning as the score remained tied heading to the Harrisburg 11th.
 
* In the bottom of the 11th, Cara Biesecker led the inning off with a single down the left field line to score Aspen Walker for the winning run.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Junior Gretchen Yanss (11-9) went the distance for Abington as scattered eight hits in 10-plus innings of work.  She finished the game striking out three and allowing two unearned runs.
 
* Foxhill went 2-for-4 at the plate driving in the team's lone run in the eighth. 
 
* Freshman Ava Livingston also had a hit for the Nittany Lions as she finished 1-for-4 with a walk.
 
* For Harrisburg, Mackenzie Sawdey (18-3) earned the win as she went 11 innings and in the process struck out eight batters. Madelyn Lehigh went 2-for-5 with a triple.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 30th meeting between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 12-18 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions are now 11-18 in the postseason in 11 total appearances.  The team has qualified for the postseason every year since 2013.  Today marked just the second time Abington and Harrisburg met up in postseason play.
