Abington Edged by Neumann in Season Opener

Aston, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's soccer team dropped its season opener against Neumann University by the score of 2-1 in a non-conference contest on Friday afternoon at Neumann's Turf Stadium. The Knights' Julianna Hatt scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute.

How It Happened
 
* The first shot of the new season was right on-goal as senior Madison McDowell registered the first of her team-high seven shots in the third minute of action.  The Knights' keeper Lex Navarro made the stop to avoid an early deficit.
 
* Abington held the advantage on shots the first part of the first half until Hatt connected on her first of two goals of the game.  Hatt gave the Knights a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute as Marisa Nicolucci assisted on the play.
 
* The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Knights until the 78th minute when freshman Meghan McMeel scored her first collegiate goal to tie the game at 1-1.  McMeel entered the game two minutes prior to her game tying score. Fellow freshman Kaitlyn Frank was credited with her first career assist.
 
* In the 86th minute, McDowell fired a shot on-goal but Navarro made the save on what would by the Nittany Lions' final shot of the game.
 
* Two minutes later, Hatt scored her second goal of the game to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage with 1:42 remaining in regulation.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Senior Rachel Wilfrid and sophomore Abby Brunnell split time in net for the Nittany Lions.  Both keepers faced eight shots and each made four saves. Wilfrid received the start in net.
 
* McDowell led the team with seven shots, including three on-goal.  McMeel finished the game with two shots.
 
* For Neumann, Nicolucci assisted Hatt on both her goals. Navarro finished the game with four saves in net.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fifth meeting between Abington and Neumann since the start of the 2015 season and the first since 2018.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-4-0 versus the Knights in the all-time series.

Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 5 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Lycoming College in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 4 p.m.
