Abington Falls to Cairn in Season Opener

Langhorne, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team dropped its season opener on the road against Cairn University by the score of 3-1 on Friday night at the Mason Activity Center.  Sophomore Zayna Jamaladdin recorded a team-high 16 kills in her Abington debut, while freshman Ellie Van Otten finished with 12 kills in her first collegiate match.

How It Happened
 
* Abington came through with a 28-26 victory in a back-and-forth opening set.  The Highlanders held the set's largest lead at 16-13 before the Nittany Lions tied the score with three straight points.  Down the stretch, Abington led 24-22 after a kill by sophomore Kayla Mason.  However, Cairn responded with back-to-back points on the Nittany Lions' set-point opportunities.  Both teams went on to exchange points on the set's next four points resulting in a 26-26 deadlock.  Abington took advantage of two Cairn attack errors to clinch the set, 28-26.
 
* Cairn tied the match with a 25-13 victory in set two.  The Highlanders grabbed a double-digit lead during a 4-0 run while already leading 17-9.  A kill by Bridget Dahn gave the home squad its largest lead of the set at 21-19.  In the third set Cairn used a 5-0 run after trailing 22-20 to close out the set at 25-22 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
* The Highlanders finished the match with a 25-17 victory in the fourth set.  Cairn led the entire set and never allowed Abington to get within three points of the lead.  The Nittany Lions trailed 7-5 early in the set.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
*   Jamaladdin had an impressive debut with the Nittany Lions.  The transfer from Albright College registered a career-high 16 kills while posting an attack percentage of .239.  She also had six digs and two service aces.
 
* Van Otten also recorded double-digit kills as she posted 12 in her first collegiate match.
 
* Freshman McKinley Grimm led the team with a match-high 23 digs in her collegiate debut.  Grimm also served as the team's setter and totaled 34 assists.
 
* Freshman Fabiola Medina also registered double-digit digs as she totaled 17 digs in her debut.
 
* For Cairn, Caroline Conrad finished with a match-high 17 kills to go along with 15 digs.  Olivia Zepp paced the offense with a match-high 48 and had 14 digs on defense.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the ninth meeting between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2014 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 5-4 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, August 31 as the Nittany Lions compete in a tri-match hosted by Immaculata University.  Abington will face the University of Valley Forge at 1 p.m. and then take on the Mighty Macs at 3 p.m.
