Abington Wins Fourth Straight; Defeats Cross-Town Rival Lions

Abington, Pa. - In the battle of the 'Lions' it was the Nittany Lions of Penn State Abington that finished on top as the women's volleyball team defeated their cross-town rival, the Lions of Bryn Athyn College, 3-0, in a non-conference match on Tuesday night inside the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* The Abington offense produced 35 kills, while committing just eight errors the entire match for a team attack percentage of .300.  Where as Bryn Athyn totaled only 25 kills and gave the Nittany Lions 21 points on attack errors.
 
* In the first set, Abington trailed 7-6, but a 9-2 run gave the Nittany Lions a 15-9 advantage. Abington held on to the lead the rest of the way and closed the set scoring four of the final five points to take the set, 25-18.
 
* Abington jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the second set, however Bryn Athyn followed with a 9-2 run to grab a 12-8 lead.  Sabrina Brock closed out the run with three straight kills. As the set progressed, the Nittany Lions rallied with a 10-2 surge to lead 18-14.  After an Abington service error made the score 18-15, the Nittany Lions ripped off seven straight points to take the set, 25-15.  Junior Alyssa Flickinger had three kills in the final surge, while sophomore Kayla Mason sealed the set win with an ace.
 
* Abington clinched its fourth straight shutout victory with a 25-13 victory in the third set.  The Nittany Lions led 15-12 and then cruised by scoring 10 of the final 11 points of the match.  Sophomore Zayna Jamaladdin started the final run with a kill and then took over on the serve.  Jamaladdin recorded six aces, including five straight before Mason finished things off with a kill to give the Nittany Lions the double-digit set victory.

* Freshman Ellie Van Otten tied her season-high with 12 kills to lead the Nittany Lions.  She committed just one error on the attack on 26 total attempts to finish the night with an impressive .423 attack percentage.
 
* Jamaladdin totaled nine kills and had an attack percentage of .269.  She also totaled a career-high seven aces.
 
* Flickinger came away with a season-high eight kills while hitting at a .375 clip. 
 
* Freshman McKinley Grimm paced the offense with 30 assists to go along with seven digs.
 
* Junior Morgan Schaefer had a team-high nine digs to set a new season-best.
 
* For Bryn Athyn, Brock finished with a team-high 12 kills, while Paige Lipp and Riley Breen each had 11 digs.  Lipp also had 18 assists and three kills.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 16th meeting between Abington and Bryn Athyn since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 9-7 versus their cross-town rivals in the all-time series.  Abington has won seven of the last eight match-ups including five straight.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 12 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Centenary University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
