Abington Splits Home Tri-Match with Brandywine & Bryn Mawr

Abington, Pa. - The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team split its home tri-match with Penn State Brandywine and Bryn Mawr College on Saturday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building.  The Nittany Lions defeated Brandywine, 3-1, before going to distance against Bryn Mawr as the Owls came away with the 3-2 victory.  Bryn Mawr also defeated Brandywine, 3-1.

How It Happened (vs. Brandywine)
 
* Abington never trailed in the opening set after jumping out to a 5-0 lead.  Brandywine came within two points of the lead twice with the latter being at 10-8.  Abington cushioned its lead down the stretch with a pair of 3-0 runs that gave the Nittany Lions a 19-11 lead.  Abington went on to take the set, 25-18.
 
* In the second set Abington already had a decent lead at 12-7 but a 5-1 run increased the spread to nine points after a kill by sophomore Bryn Atkins made the score 17-8.  The Nittany Lions grabbed a double-digit lead at 22-12 after a service error by Brandywine.  Abington won the set with ease, 25-13.
 
* Abington saw its 14-8 advantage in the third set quickly disappear after a 9-1 run by Brandywine made the score 17-15.  The Nittany Lions rallied with five straight points to regain the lead at 20-17.  Sophomore Zayna Jamaladdin had a pair of aces to help fuel the run.  Abington held a 22-20 lead before Brandywine closed out the set with five unanswered points, included back-to-back aces by Hailey Piccirillo on the tail end to take the set, 25-22.
 
* Abington bounced back in the fourth set and scored 11 of the final 12 points of the set.  Leading 14-10, Abington ripped off five straight points, including a stretch of three aces by Jamaladdin before freshman Ellie Van Otten capped the run with a kill.  After an offensive point by Brandywine, Abington scored the final six points of the set.  Sophomore Kayla Mason started the final run with a kill, while freshman Fabiola Medina registered four straight aces.  A Brandywine attack error clinched the set for Abington at 25-11.

* Abington had three players record double-digit kills in the win.  Jamaladdin finished with a match-high 14 kills to go along with a career-high 10 aces. Mason and Van Otten each totaled 10 kills.
 
* Medina recorded a season-high 22 digs, while connecting on five aces to tie her season-high.
 
* Freshman McKinley Grimm set a season-high with 36 assists to go along with eight digs.
 
* For Brandywine, Emma O'Reilly led the team with six assists, while Anna Ramirez totaled a team-high 12 digs.
 
How It Happened (vs. Bryn Mawr)
 
* Abington trailed the first set 11-1, but as things progressed along the Nittany Lions chipped away at the deficit to take their first lead of the set at 20-18.  Abington, down 18-15, used a 5-0 run to steal the lead from the Owls.  Junior Alyssa Flickinger capped the run with back-to-back kills to make the score 20-18. It turned into a back-and-forth battle the rest of the set before Bryn Mawr broke a 26-26 tie with back-to-back points to take the opening set, 28-26.
 
* Abington responded with two straight victories taking the second set, 25-16, and the third set by the score of 25-17.  The Nittany Lions trailed early in the second set at 9-7 before six straight points to hold a 13-9 advantage.  Abington maintained the lead the rest of the way to take the set and tie the match at 1-1.
 
* In the third set the Nittany Lions led by as many as five points at 14-9. Once again the Nittany Lions maintained the advantage despite the Owls coming within two points of the lead at 14-12. Abington closed out the set scoring five of the final seven points.
 
* Abington led momentarily in the fourth set at 4-3, but Bryn Mawr used a mini 5-0 run to slightly increase the lead, 8-4.  The Owls slowly kept building the lead up until holding a double-digit lead at 22-12. Bryn Mawr forced a fifth and decisive set with a 25-14 win in set four.
 
* The Nittany Lions opened the fifth set with a 5-1 run but the Owls responded with four straight points to tie the set at 5-5.  After exchanging the next four points of the set, the Owls broke pattern and scored three straight to lead 9-7.  A service error by the Owls gave the Nittany Lions a point at 9-8, however Bryn Mawr went on to score the final six points of the set for the 15-8 victory and 3-2 win of the match.

* Flickinger led the Nittany Lions with a career-high 15 kills while hitting at a .444 clip.
 
* Mason also set a career-high as she finished with 12 kills after tying her previous career-high with 10 kills against Brandywine.
 
* Freshman Oliva Juan set a season-high with 10 kills.
 
* Medina led the Nittany Lions with 21 digs; one shy of her season-high set earlier in the afternoon against Brandywine.
 
* Grimm recorded back-to-back 30-plus assists as she finished with 35 which turned out to be one shy of her season-high that she set against Brandywine.  She also totaled 16 digs.
 
* Freshman Angel Morales totaled a season-high seven digs.
 
* For Bryn Mawr, Elise Perry and Adelaide Grace each totaled 13 kills.  Zara Kepler and Charlotte Mullen each finished with 19 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the third meeting between Abington and Brandywine and the first since 2013.  Abington is now 2-1 versus Brandywine in the all-time series.  Abington and Bryn Mawr were facing off for the eighth time since 2013 and the two teams are now 4-4 versus one another.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Monday, Sept. 16 as the Nittany Lions host Immaculata University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
