Abington Takes Down Mighty Macs, 3-0

Abington, Pa.  – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team defeated Immaculata University for the second time in as many weeks as the Nittany Lions came away with another 3-0 triumph over the Mighty Macs in a non-conference contest on Monday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening set and never looked back.  The Nittany Lions took advantage of four attack errors by the Mighty Macs in the opening run as they finished the set with 11 errors on the attack in the set.  The Nittany Lions led by as many as 13 points in the set at 20-7 before taking the set, 25-13.
 
* The Nittany Lions opened the second set with a 4-0 run and like the first set never trailed.  The Mighty Macs came within one point of the lead at 19-18 but two straight attack errors increased the Abington lead to 21-18.  After a service miscue by the Nittany Lions, Abington scored the final four points of the set to win, 25-19. 
 
* The Nittany Lions trailed for the first time in the match in the third set.  The Mighty Macs led by as many as six points at 13-7.  With the score then shifting to 14-10, the Nittany Lions went on a 5-0 run to tie the set at 14-14 after a kill by freshman Ellie Van Otten.  After a kill by Immaculata's Mel Mann, Abington responded with an 8-0 run to grab its biggest lead of the set at 22-15.  The Mighty Macs cut the lead to 22-17 but Abington closed out the set with the final three points.  Van Otten and sophomore Zayna Jamaladdin sandwiched a pair of kills between an attack error by the Mighty Macs for the final points.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
*  The Abington defense forced 26 attack errors by the Mighty Macs in the match.  Immaculata also had nine service errors as the Nittany Lions benefited with 35 points on miscues.
 
* Junior Alyssa Flickinger led the Nittany Lions with nine kills as she committed just one attack error on 11 attempts for an impressive .727 attack percentage. 
 
* Jamaladdin added six kills and four digs, while sophomore Bryn Atkins and Kayla Mason each totaled four kills.  Van Otten also totaled four kills in the match.
 
* Freshman Fabiola Medina led the team with 10 digs to go along with two aces. 
 
* Freshman McKinley Grimm recorded a match-high 26 assists and four aces. 
 
* For Immaculata, Alayah Phifer and Mel Mann each had five kills.  Dinah Stabinski finished with a match-high 14 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the ninth meeting between Abington and Immaculata since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-6 versus the Mighty Macs in the all-time series after the two regular season shutout victories this year.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 18 as the Nittany Lions welcome Delaware Valley University to the Abington Athletic Building for a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
