Abington Scores Twice in Second Half to Defeat Griffins

Gwynedd Valley, Pa.  – The Penn State Abington women's soccer team scored two second half goals to rally to defeat Gwynedd Mercy University, 2-1, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening at the Gwynedd Mercy Athletic Complex. The win marks the team's third of the season surpassing last year's win total six games into the season.

How It Happened
 
* Abington scored two second half goals five minutes apart to pull ahead of the Griffins who had a 1-0 lead entering the 62nd minute of play. Freshman Meghan McGinly tied the game at 1-1 after collecting a rebounded ball and finding the back of the net for her second goal of the season.  Sophomore Nayeska Ravelo's initial shot hit off the post and McGinly was there to tally the score.
 
* In the 66th minute, freshman Meghan McMeel gave the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead after converting a penalty kick attempt.  Abington was awarded a PK after a foul by the Griffins inside the box.
 
* Senior goalkeeper Rachel Wilfrid preserved the one goal lead with two key stops in the 82nd minute. Wilfrid finished the game with four saves.

* McMeel's goal marked her first-ever penalty kick score and her first career game-winning score. 
 
* Ravelo's assist on McGinly's score was her first of her career.  She now has seven points this season (3G |1A) setting a new career-high.
 
* Wilfrid's four saves in the game pushed her career total to 173.  She's currently nine saves shy of tying former standout Gabrielle Benedict for second most saves in program history.  Benedict recorded 182 saves in her two-year career (2011-12).
 
* Gwynedd Mercy's Natalie Gablein registered seven saves in net after facing 21 shots by the Nittany Lions.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the fifth meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2018 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-2 versus the Griffins in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 21 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Immaculata University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 1 p.m.
