Abington Records Third Straight Shutout; Downs Gwynedd Mercy

Abington, Pa. - The Penn State Abington women's volleyball picked up its third straight shutout victory after defeating visiting Gwynedd Mercy University, 3-0, in the team's home opener on Wednesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington recorded a match-high 12 kills in the opening set and rolled out to a 9-1 advantage.  Leading 2-1, the Nittany Lions scored seven unanswered points, including a pair of aces by Fabiola MedinaKayla Mason capped the scoring with two kills sandwiched between a kill by Ellie Van Otten.
 
* Gwynedd Mercy made things interesting and rallied to cut the first set deficit down to 12-11, however the Nittany Lions never relinquished the lead and distanced themselves from the Griffins down the stretch. Abington took a 20-14 lead off another ace by Medina and took the set 25-16 after three straight attack errors by the Griffins closed the set.
 
* In the second set the Nittany Lions once again opened with a huge run.  After the Griffins scored the set's opening point, Abington followed with a 7-1 run.  Like the first set, the Nittany Lions never gave up the lead and held the Griffins to within six points of the lead majority of the set.  A service ace late in the set by Maddie Welch gave the Nittany Lions their largest lead of the set at 23-15.
 
*  Abington closed out the match with a 25-22 victory in the third set.  The Nittany Lions led nearly the entire way in a set that featured four ties.  Abington trailed for the first time since falling behind 2-1 early on in the second set.  The Griffins grabbed a 22-21 lead after an attack error by the Abington offense.  A service error on the ensuing serve tied the set at 22-22.  Medina then connected on her fourth and final ace of the match to break the tie before Ellie Van Otten gave the Nittany Lions match-point with a kill.  The Griffins followed with an attack error for the matches' final point.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Sophomore Zayna Jamaladdin led the Nittany Lions with a match-high 10 kills, while Van Otten and Mason each finished with seven kills. 
 
* Medina recorded a team-high 17 digs to go along with four service aces.
 
* McKinley Grimm also totaled double-digit digs as she finished the night with 13.  Grimm also led the team with 19 assissts.
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, Kate Etter recorded 10 kills and seven digs, while Bria Purnell added nine kills and 11 digs.  Ayanna Gaston finished with 19 digs and 23 assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 11th meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 7-4 versus the Griffins in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 10 as the Nittany Lions host Bryn Athyn College in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
