Abington Falls Short Against Patriots

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team fell short to the University of Valley Forge by the score of 77-73 in a United East Conference (UEC) contest on Saturday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed by as many as 12 points early in the second half after the Patriots went on an 11-0 run right after the Nittany Lions made it a one-point game.  A layup by senior Kolby Miller made the score 36-35 before the Patriots scored 11 unanswered points to lead 47-35 at the 16:13 mark.
 
* Later in the half the Nittany Lions still trailed by double-digits after Quinton Renigar hit a three-pointer to make the score 52-42 with 12:06 to play.  Over the next two-plus minutes Abington erased the deficit and tied the game at 53-53 thanks to an 11-1 run.  Freshman Gabe Swift knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game.
 
* After a defensive stop, the Nittany Lions grabbed the lead for the first time since leading 22-20 at the 6:44 mark of the first half. A jumper by Swift made the score 55-53.
 
* Both teams exchanged the lead multiple times down the stretch, but Abington managed a two-possession advantage with three minutes to play when freshman Anthony Pineda knocked down a three to make the score 71-67. 
 
* The Patriots tied the game at 72-72 with a 1:31 left on the clock after Reingar split a pair of free throws. The Nittany Lions broke the tie two possessions later after Miller split two of his free throws. 
 
* On the ensuing Valley Forge possession, Renigar knocked down a three-pointer to give the Patriots a 75-73 advantage with only :43 seconds remaining in regulation.  The Patriots made two defensive stops on the next two Abington possessions and Christian Renninger made two free throws in the final seconds to give Valley Forge a two-possession lead.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Abington had four players all score 13 points in the game.  Freshman Don Hairston finished the game with 13 points and eight rebounds to go along with a pair of blocks on defense. 
 
* Swift finished with 13 points after shooting 5-of-8 from the field.
 
* Freshman Jahad Marable also scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go along with seven rebounds.
 
* Pineda's 13 points set a new season-high as he shot 4-of-5 from the field, including 3-of-4 from deep range. 
 
* Freshman Aiden Brown added seven points to go along with a team-high 10 rebounds. Brown also had a team-high three steals.
 
* For Valley Forge, Isaiah Reece led all scorers with 16 points, while Renninger recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  He also had a game-high seven assists and four steals.

Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Valley Forge.

Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 22 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Lancaster Bible College in a United East match-up.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
