Abington Defeats Patriots as Three Record Double-Doubles

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team had three players record double-doubles as the Nittany Lions defeated the University of Valley Forge, 78-56, in a United East Conference (UEC) contest on Saturday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building. Junior Nia Newman (19pts | 10rebs) along with sophomores Amirah Hackney (14pts | 10rebs) and Amina Reid (18pts | 11ast) all had double-doubles for the Nittany Lions.

How It Happened
 
*  Abington never trailed in the game and led the entire way except for when the game was tied 2-2 in the opening minute. The Nittany Lions jumped out to a 12-2 run to grab their first double-digit lead of the game by the 6:43 mark of the opening quarter.  Junior Cole Esther scored six of the team's first 12 points of the game.
 
* Valley Forge cut the deficit down to four points (12-8) later in the quarter but Abington quickly pushed through seven straight points to regain its double-digiti lead at 19-8.  Reid capped the mini run with a three-pointer.
 
* The Patriots came within two possessions of the lead again in the second quarter.  A three-pointer by Dominique Barnes made the score 28-23 midway through the quarter. However, Abington went on to outscore the Patriots, 12-5, the final five minutes of the quarter to take a 40-28 advantage into halftime.
 
* The Abington offense came out firing in the third quarter scoring 15 of the first 17 points in the quarter.  Abington connected on four three-pointers during its 15-2 run, including two by both Reid and Newman.  The Nittany Lions finished the quarter with a 67-42 lead.
 
* Abington pushed its lead to as many as 31 points when the team led 75-44 at the 6:20 mark of the fourth quarter after Reid hit her fourth three-pointer of the game.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Hackney recorded her fourth straight double-double as she totaled 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  In her four double-doubles, Hackney has averaged 19.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.
 
* Newman finished with a game-high 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season and her second in three games. She also had three assists and two steals.
 
* Reid recorded her third double-double of the season as she filled the box score with 18 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and seven steals.  Her 11 assists tied her career-high set earlier this season.
 
* Cole scored a season-high 10 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists.
 
* Freshman Hailey Revak also scored in double-figures as she added 12 points.
 
* Freshman Tarianda Washington grabbed eight rebounds.
 
* For Valley Forge, Barnes recorded a double-double as she led the team with a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds.  She shot 7-of-12 from deep range.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and Valley Forge since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-1 versus the Patriots in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 22 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Penn State Brandywine in a United East contest.  Game time is set for 5 p.m.
