Abington Cruises Past Brandywine, 83-63

Media, Pa. – Five players scored in double-figures as the Penn State Abington women's basketball team cruised past Penn State Brandywine, 83-63, in a United East Conference (UEC) contest on Wednesday night at the Brandywine Commons Gym.

How It Happened
 
* Brandywine opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run to grab its biggest lead of the game at 42-38 after trailing at the half, 38-35. 
 
* Abington quickly responded and outscored Brandywine, 20-4, the final seven minutes of the quarter to take a double-digit lead of 58-46 into the fourth quarter. 
 
* Abington held on to its double-digit advantage the rest of the way and increased its lead to as many as 20 points.  With 5:42 remaining in the game, junior Naila Newman scored a fastbreak basket to make the score 74-54.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Naila Newman led all scorers with a game-high 20 points to go along with seven rebounds, six assists and a game-high four steals. 
 
* Sophomores Amirah Hackney and Amina Reid each totaled 15 points.  Hackney added six rebounds, one block and two steals, while Reid totaled five boards, three assists, one block and three steals.
 
* Junior Nia Newman recorded her seventh double-double of the season as she finished with 13 points and a game-high 20 rebounds; two shy of her career-high.  It marked Newman's second 20-plus rebound performance of the season.
 
* Junior Esther Cole scored a season-high 12 points to go along with seven rebounds.
 
* For Brandywine, Anaiyah Allen totaled a team-high 17 points, while Trinell Watson contributed 14 points and nine rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and Brandywine since the start of the 2012-13 season.  Abington is now 2-1 versus Brandywine in the all-time series after completing the season sweep.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 25 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Harrisburg in United East action.  Tip-off from the Abington Athletic Building is set for 1 p.m.
