Abington Cruises Past Highlanders, 75-46

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team improved to 4-0 in the United East Conference (UEC) after defeating Cairn University, 75-46, on Saturday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building.  The Nittany Lions' defense forced 41 turnovers in the win setting a new single game record in the program's Division III era.

How It Happened
 
* Abington led 15-6 midway through the first quarter after sophomore Amirah Hackney hit a jumper to cap an 8-1 run. However, Cairn rallied and closed out the final five minutes of the opening quarter on an 11-4 run to come within two points of the lead at 19-17.  Kailee Sobrino fueled the run by connecting on three three-pointers.
 
* In the second quarter the Nittany Lions pulled away from the Highlanders.  Leading 26-21 at the 4:43 mark, Abington outscored Cairn, 16-2, to end the half with a 42-23 lead.  Abington held the Highlanders to just six points in the quarter.
 
* Outside of halftime, it was more of the same as Abington scored 18 unanswered points to start the third quarter.  Junior Naila Newman gave the Nittany Lions a 60-23 lead with just over five minutes to play in the quarter.  The Abington defense allowed only two field goals by the Highlanders in the quarter.
 
* Abington led by as many as 42 points after a three-pointer by sophomore Kylie Frey made the score 73-31 with 6:02 remaining in regulation.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Sophomore Amina Reid led the team with 16 points (6-11 FG) to go along with four rebounds and a game-high six assists.  Reid also had a game-high seven steals on defense. 
 
* Frey came off the bench and set a new season-high with 14 points while shooting 5-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-9 from deep range.
 
* Junior Tori Tolson also scored a season-high off the bench as she finished the day with 12 points.  Tolson also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season.
 
* Junior Nia Newman also scored in double-figures as she finished with 13 points to go along with nine rebounds. 
 
* Naila Newman added 10 points and dished out five assists.  Newman also had a season-high five steals.
 
* For Cairn, Sobrino led all scorers with a game-high 24 points; 17 of which came in the first half.  Dezaray Bright added eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
Lock Down Defense
The Abington defense forced 41 turnovers to set a new single game record in the program's Division III era. It marked the most by an opponent since Wilson College committed 39 turnovers against the Nittany Lions back on Feb. 18, 2015.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth meeting between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 8-1 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 8 as the Nittany Lions host Wilson College in a United East match-up.  Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
