Abington Shuts Out Wilson in Finale

Chambersburg, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's soccer team came up with a big victory in the team's regular season finale as the Nittany Lions shutout Wilson College, 1-0, in the final United East Conference (UEC) contest of the season on Saturday afternoon at Kris's Meadow.  Abington, with the win, unofficially clinched the sixth seed in the upcoming conference tournament and will have a first-round bye before hitting the road for the quarterfinals on Nov. 1.  The United East will officially announce the final postseason pairings once all conference games are concluded on Sunday.

How It Happened
 
* An own goal minutes into the second half turned out to be the difference in the game.  A Wilson defender knocked in the ball into their own net in the 49th minute to give Abington a 1-0 lead.
 
* Abington held the advantage on shots, 17-13, including 7-3 with shots on-target.  In the 67th minute, junior Nayeska Ravelo had her shot stopped by Wilson's Madison Ebersole which would have given the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead.
 
* Down the stretch the Nittany Lions nearly had an insurance goal but shots by senior Ice Longenbach and sophomore Meghan McGinly were also stopped by Ebersole to keep the score at 1-0 with less than ten minute to play.
 
* Wilson managed a shot in the 84th minute but was misfired by Halley Shaffer right of the net.
 
* Abington had chances in the final minutes of the first half to take a lead heading into halftime but on-goal shots by sophomores Meghan McGinly and Kaitlyn Frank were halted by Ebersole. 
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Abington keeper Sam Ridler recorded her second shutout of the season as she totaled three saves to preserve the clean slate.  Ridler lowered her goals against average to 1.69 on the year.
 
* Frank totaled a career-high eight shots.
 
* Ebersole made seven saves in net for Wilson.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 11th meeting between Abington and Wilson since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 9-1-1 versus the Phoenix in the all-time series.
 
Postseason Picture
The postseason picture is becoming clearer as it appears the Nittany Lions will be the sixth seed when the conference officially announces the pairings to the United East Tournament.  As a result, Abington will receive a first round bye and travel for the quarterfinals on Nov. 1.
