Abington Drops Non-Conference Contest at Alvernia

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team suffered a 92-80 setback on the road against Alvernia University in a non-conference contest on Monday night at Jack McCloskey Court.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed by 12 points early in the second half after Janye Stanley made the score 60-48 for the Red Wolves.  The Nittany Lions, over the next seven minutes, chipped away at the lead to come within one possession of tying the game.  A three-pointer by junior Mike Byfield cut the Alvernia advantage to 70-67 with 8:34 to play in regulation.
 
* Alvernia responded with a 16-3 run to push its lead back to double-digits after Robert Cottrell completed a three-point play with a free throw.  The Red Wolves swelled their lead to as many as 16 points (86-70) with just over three minutes to play in regulation.
 
* Abington cut the deficit down to 10 points (86-76) with 1:40 on the clock after junior Tamir Powell knocked down a three.  However, the Red Wolves converted 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to preserve their double-digit lead.
 
* Abington held a 31-30 lead with less than three minutes to play in the first half after junior Tyler Fox scored a layup. Alvernia closed out the half with an 11-4 run to lead 41-35 at halftime.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Senior JoJo Kelly scored a season-high 26 points (8-16 FG) to go along with six rebounds and two assists.  Kelly converted 8-of-10 from the free throw line.
 
* Fox also scored a season-high as he poured in 17 points (7-14 FG) after knocking down three three-pointers in the game.
 
* Junior K'Mari Smith added a season-high 12 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the field.  Smith also totaled a game-high four steals on defense.
 
* Powell scored 12 points off the bench setting a season-high in scoring.  He also had two boards and blocked a pair of shots.
 
* Byfield contributed eight points (3-4 FG) off the bench.
 
* For Alvernia, three players scored 20-plus points as Cottrell scored a team-high 23 points to go along with six rebounds.  Elijah Hamilton added 21 points and six rebounds, while Stanley netted 20 points with nine boards.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Alvernia.

Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 12 as the Nittany Lions host Delaware Valley University in a non-conference contest. Tip-off from the Abington Athletic Building is set for 7 p.m.
