Abington Edged by Aggies, 86-82

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team fell just short against visiting Delaware Valley University by the score of 86-82 in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed by as many as 15 points with less than four minutes to play in the first half after Jeremiah Alexander scored a layup basket to give DelVal a 33-18 lead.  However, over the next three minutes the Nittany Lions put together a 12-2 run to cut the deficit down to five at 35-30. Juniors Tamir Powell and Tyler Fox bookend the run with three-pointers. 
 
* The Aggies' Jordan Strickland converted a three-point play with :20 seconds remaining in the half to increase the lead to 38-30 at the half.
 
* In the second half the Nittany Lions faced another double-digit deficit after Antonia Redding hit a three-pointer to make the score 44-32 at the 17:28 mark.  Over the next seven-plus minutes, Abington chipped away at the lead and came within one point (52-51) after Powell scored a layup basket at the midway point of the half.
 
* Abington regained the lead at the 9:09 mark when sophomore Tyler Meinel scored a layup to make the score 53-52.  It marked the first lead for the Nittany Lions since leading 15-13 in the first half.
 
* The lead switched hands six times before Abington scored on back-to-back possessions to lead 61-58 with less than six minutes to play in regulation.  Junior Mike Byfield scored a layup to give the Nittany Lions the three-point lead.
 
* Later in the half with the score tied 64-64 at the 4:31 mark, Redding hit a three-pointer for the Aggies that fueled a 12-2 run.  DelVal grabbed another double-digit lead after Mike Herrin capped the run with a three-pointer.  Herrin's three gave the Aggies a 76-66 lead with two minute to play.
 
* Abington cut the lead to five (84-79) after a three-pointer by junior K'Mari Smith but time was against the Nittany Lions with only :12 seconds left on the clock.
 
* Free throws play a factor down the stretch as DelVal connected on 6-of-8 from the line in the final minute.
 
* Senior JoJo Kelly capped the scoring in the game as he drained a running three-pointer as time expired with the score at 86-82.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Smith led all scorers with 23 points as he set a season-high.  He also had four assists and two boards in the game.
 
* Kelly totaled 13 points to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.  With his 13 points, Smith is now 31 points away from 1,000 for his career.
 
* Fox added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Meinel finished with 11 points, six boards and two blocks.
 
* Powell tied his season-high with 12 points while also totaling seven rebounds and four blocks.
 
* Sophomore Sean Murphy added nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.
 
* For DelVal, Redding scored a team-high 20 points, while Herrin and TJ Wright each totaled 15 points.  Alexander finished the night with eight blocks on defense while scoring six points on the other end.
 
All-Time Series

Tonight marked the third meeting between Abington and DelVal since the start of the 2023-24 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 0-3 versus the Aggies in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Nov. 14 as the Nittany Lions take part in the Widener University Tip-Off for Autism Awareness two-day event.  Abington will face Widener at 8 p.m. and then on Saturday, Nov. 15 take on Washington and Jefferson College.
