Abington Picks Up Win at Centenary

Hackettstown, N.J. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team had four players score in double-figures, including junior Amirah Hackney who scored a team-high 23 points in the team's 75-61 victory over Centenary University on Thursday night at the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center.

How It Happened
 
*  Abington trailed by as many as nine points midway through the first quarter when Centenary took a 14-5 lead after a three-pointer by Makayla Williams.  The Cyclones went on to lead 21-14 by quarters end.
 
* The second quarter is where the game turned in favor of the Nittany Lions. Two quick baskets, including a three-pointer by Hackney cut the deficit to 21-19.  After a Cyclones bucket, junior Amina Reid connected on a three-pointer to make the score 23-22.  On the team's next possession, Abington took over the lead when sophomore Xenia Gillis scored a tip-in basket at the 6:36 mark.
 
* Over the final seven minutes of the second quarter, Abington outscored Centenary by a 20-2 margin to lead 39-25 at the half.  The Nittany Lions shot 9-of-14 from the field during that span. 
 
* Abington maintained its double-digit lead into the fourth quarter.  The Nittany Lions had a 58-46 advantage after Gillis scored a layup basket at the 7:08 mark.  Centenary responded with a mini 7-0 run over the next minute to cut the score to 58-53.
 
* The Nittany Lions quickly halted the run thanks to a three-point play by Gillis capped with a free throw.  After a few stops, Abington regained a double-digit advantage when Gillis converted a pair of free throws to make the score 63-53 with 4:25 to play.
 
* Abington pushed its lead to as many as 14 points (71-57) in the final :90 seconds after junior Layla Reid made a pair of free throws.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Hackney led the Nittany Lions with a 23-point performance for her second 20-plus point scoring outburst of the season.  She also had three steals on defense.
 
* Gillis recorded her second double-double in as many games as she totaled 15 points and a game-high 19 rebounds. She also totaled three steals in the game.
 
* Amina Reid also scored in double-figures as she finished the night with 13 points to go along with a game-high six assists and five rebounds.  Reid added two assists increasing her season total to 12 and her career-total to 187. 
 
* Senior Naila Newman scored 10 points, while sophomore Tarianda Washington added eight points and six rebounds. 
 
* For Centenary, Vatijah Davis scored a game-high 25 points and totaled a team-best 16 rebounds to record a double-double.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Centenary since the start of the 2016-17 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-3 versus the Cyclones in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 15 as the Nittany Lions head to our nation's capital to take on Gallaudet University in a non-conference contest.  Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
