Abington Falls to Knights, 87-77

Aston, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest at Neumann University by the score of 87-77 on Saturday afternoon at the Mirenda Center.

How It Happened
 
* In a back-and-forth early first half, Abington held its largest lead of the half at 19-16 after junior Tamir Powell drained a three-pointer at the 8:31 mark.
 
* Neumann responded with a three on its ensuing possession and followed with a 9-0 run to lead 25-19 with just over six minutes to play until halftime.  The Knights increased their lead to as many as eight points (33-25) after a Julian Phillips three-pointer at the 2:13 mark.  Junior Mike Byfield answered with a three on Abington's next possession to make the score 33-28 which is how the half ended.
 
* In the second half, Abington tied the score twice with the latter coming at 16:17 when Byfield hit a jumper to make the score 39-39.  Three possessions later the Nittany Lions regained the lead when senior JoJo Kely scored a layup followed by a free throw to make it a 42-39 game.
 
* Neumann recaptured the lead at 45-44 before Abington tied the score at 48-48 with 11:39 to play.  After an offensive board, Emeer Coombs connected on a three-pointer to give the Knights a 51-48 advantage.  From there, the Knights pushed their lead to nine after a DJ Earl layup made the score 62-53 with less than eight minutes on the clock.
 
* Neumann increased its lead to double-digits for the first time at 67-57 and went on to hold a 16-point advantage with 1:39 to play.  Donte Dupriest scored a layup basket to make the score 81-65.
 
* Abington cut the deficit down to single digits (82-73) after junior Jamze Johnson hit a three-pointer with less than a minute on clock.  Johnson connected on another three-pointer to make the score 85-77, but time wasn't on the Nittany Lions' side.  The Knights closed the final :20 seconds of the game with a pair of free throws by Aarick Salata.
 
Inside the Box Score

* Kelly scored a team-high 22 points while converting 9-of-11 from the free throw line. 
 
* Byfield scored a season-high 12 points (5-9 FG) to go along with five rebounds and two steals.
 
* Powell also scored in double-figures adding 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
 
* Junior K'Mari Smith filled the box score with nine points and team highs in rebounds (6) and assists (7).
 
* Johnson scored a season-high seven points in two minutes of action late in the second half.
 
* For Neumann, Dupriest scored a game-high 34 points (12-17 FG) to go along with a game-high 20 rebounds to record a double-double.  Bryan Etienne also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 14 boards off the bench.  Earl finished with 25 points.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Neumann since the start of the 2012-13 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 0-4 versus the Knights in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Monday, Nov. 24 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Misericordia University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 6 p.m.
