Abington Defeats Wildcats; Advance to United East Quarterfinals

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team advanced to the United East Conference (UEC) quarterfinals after defeating the tenth-seeded Penn College Wildcats, 3-0, in a first round match on Wednesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.  The seventh-seeded Nittany Lions will now face second-seeded St. Mary's College (Md.) in the quarterfinals on Saturday in St. Mary's City, Md.

How It Happened
 
* Abington cruised through the first two sets beating the Wildcats by the scores of 25-11 and 25-12.  The Nittany Lions defense forced 19 errors on the attack by Penn College's hitters in the two sets.  Abington also combined for 14 aces on the serve in the first two sets.
 
* In the third set, Abington appeared to be heading towards another one-sided victory after back-to-back aces by sophomore Ellie Van Otten made the score 20-9.  However, a 10-0 run brought the Wildcats to one point of the lead at 20-19.  Both teams exchanged a pair of points with Abington leading 22-21.  After a service error by Penn College, junior Zayna Jamaladdin ripped off back-to-back aces to seal the victory at 25-21.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Jamaladdin led the Nittany Lions with eight kills to go along with four aces and four digs.
 
* Junior Brynn Atkins, the United East Defensive Player of the Week, totaled three blocks (2BS/1BA), including her 100th career block assist.  Atkins, the program's all-time leader in all three blocking categories, now has 170 career blocks. She also recorded five aces.
 
* Junior Ryenn Mamrosch paced the offense with 16 assists, while sophomore Fabiola Medina led the team with seven digs.
 
* Sophomore Ellie Van Otten recorded seven of the team's 20 aces in the match.
 
* For Penn College, Lilly Stockum finished with a match-high 14 kills.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 13th meeting between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2014 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 13-0 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.
 
Abington in the Postseason
Abington is appearing in the postseason for the sixth time since joining Division III in 2011.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-0 in the first round and 4-5 overall.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 7 as the Nittany Lions travel to face St. Mary's in the United East quarterfinals.  Match time is still to be determined.
