Abington Drops Season Opener to Arcadia

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team fell short against visiting Arcadia University by the score of 73-59 in the team's season opener on Friday night at the Abington Athletic Building.  First-year head coach Sean Westerlund made his Abington debut after four seasons at Bryn Athyn College in which he led the Lions to the 2025 United East championship.

How It Happened
 
* Abington held a one-point lead at the 11:13 mark of the opening half after junior Tyler Fox scored a layup basket to make the score 15-14.  However, over the next eight-plus minutes the Knights went on a 22-5 run to grab a 16-point advantage at 36-20. 
 
* Arcadia closed out the half leading 40-24 after Jamison Lynam capped the scoring in the half with a layup basket.
 
* Abington turned a 16-point deficit into a two-possession game heading out of the locker rooms at halftime.  The Nittany Lions opened the second half with a 14-4 run to come within six points of the lead at 44-38.  Senior JoJo Kelly scored eight of the team's 14 points during the run.
 
* As the half progressed the Nittany Lions found themselves trailing by two points after a pair of free throws by Fox made the score 47-45 with 12:17 on the clock.
 
* However, Arcadia answered with a 13-4 run over the next five-plus minutes to increase its lead back to double-digits.  A three-point play by Lynam capped with a free throw gave the Knights a 61-49 lead. Arcadia increased its lead to as many as 19 points at 69-50 with less than five minutes to play and held on to the double-figure lead the rest of the way.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Kelly led the Nittany Lions with a game-high 24 points while shooting 8-of-17 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
 
* Sophomore Tyler Meinel also scored in double-figures as he added 12 points (5-7 FG) to go along with six rebounds.
 
* Sophomore Sean Murphy led the team with seven rebounds while adding five points.
 
* Fox finished with eight points off the bench.
 
* For Arcadia, Nas Johnson totaled 21 points (7-14 FG) and six rebounds, while Lynam added 16 points (7-16 FG) and five assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 11th meeting between Abington and Arcadia since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-8 versus the Knights in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Monday, Nov. 10 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Alvernia University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.
