Abington Opens United East with Victory Over Wildcats

Williamsport, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season after defeating Penn College, 78-67, in the United East Conference (UEC) opener on Wednesday night at Bardo Gym.  The Nittany Lions had four players score in double-figures, including senior JoJo Kelly who finished with a game-high 23 points marking his fifth 20-plus point performance of the season and third straight.

How It Happened
 
* Abington overcame two eight-point deficits in the first half with the latter coming at the 7:13 mark.  The Wilcats' Landon Reeder split a pair of free throws to make the score 19-11.  Over the next three minutes of action the Nittany Lions went on a 9-0 run to grab their first lead since leading 6-4 earlier in the half. Junior K'Mari Smith capped the run with a layup basket giving Abington a 20-19 lead.
 
* The Wildcats regained the lead on their following possession when Owen Newcomer connected on a three-pointer.  Penn College held on to the lead until the minute of the half.  Sophomore Tyler Meinel scored a layup and then junior Joshua Hunter split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 28-28.
 
* In the second half, the Nittany Lions trailed 35-32 at the 17:32 mark.  The Abington offense erupted for a 17-0 run over the next three-plus minutes to grab its biggest lead of the game at 49-35.  Kelly capped the run with a layup as he scored eight of the team's 17 points, including a pair of three-pointers.
 
* Penn College answered with a run of its own as the Wildcats eventually tied the game at 51-51 after a 16-2 run.  Despite the rally, the Nittany Lions never trailed again in the game.  In fact, Abington responded with another big run scoring 12 of the game's next 14 points to lead 63-53.  Meinel gave the Nittany Lions a 10-point advantage with a layup score at the 7:32 mark.
 
* Over the final seven minutes of the game the Nittany Lions held on to a comfortable lead not allowing the Wildcats to come relatively close of another rally. 
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Kelly nearly recorded a double-double after leading the team with 23 points and nine rebounds. It marked his fifth 20-plus point performance of the season and his third straight. Kelly also was 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.
 
* Junior Mike Byfield finished with 15 points (6-11 FG) to go along with five boards and two steals. 
 
* Meinel added 14 points (7-11 FG) and second boards while recording a season-high five steals on defense.
 
* Smith also scored in double-figures as he contributed 11 points to go along with seven rebounds and a team-high four assists. 
 
* Sophomore Sean Murphy added eight points and seven rebounds, while junior Tamir Powell grabbed eight rebounds and blocked a pair of shots on defense.
 
* For Penn College, Ethan Roman came off the bench and scored a team-high 14 points, while Octavio Alexander finished the night with 12 points.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 19th meeting between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2014-15 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 13-6 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.

Abington returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 6 as the Nittany Lions welcome Penn State Brandywine to the Athletic Building.  Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
