Abington Falls to Nationally Ranked Trinity

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team returned to action after its holiday break to host Trinity College (Conn.) in a non-conference contest to close out the calendar year on Tuesday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building.  The Nittany Lions fell to the nationally ranked No. 17 Bantams, 57-42.

How It Happened
 
* Abington kept things close early in the first quarter against the 17th ranked team in Division III.  A layup by junior Amina Reid made it a 9-6 game at the 3:40 mark.  However, Trinity scored the next seven points to close the opening quarter with a 16-6 advantage.
 
* In the second quarter Trinity increased its lead to double-figures after Kiki Fossbender's fastbreak basket made the score 20-10 at the 6:07 mark.  The Bantams finished the quarter leading 24-14.
 
* Abington made a run in the third quarter and cut the deficit down to two possessions after senior Nia Newman converted a pair of free throws.  The Nittany Lions trailed 30-26 with less than five minutes to play in the quarter.
 
* Over the final four minutes of the third quarter, Trinity responded with a 14-5 surge to take a 44-31 lead heading into the final frame. The Bantams increased their lead to as many as 17 points in the fourth, including a 51-34 lead with 6:32 to play.  Trinity held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Junior Amirah Hackney led Abington with a team-high 11 points off the bench.  Hackney also totaled six rebounds and two steals.
 
* Nia Newman finished with five points and is now 15 points away from reaching the 1,000 career point milestone.
 
* Sophomore Tarianda Washington totaled nine points and eight rebounds, while senior Naila Newman added four points and eight boards.
 
* Reid totaled seven points and led the team with four assists and four steals.  With her four steals, Reid now has 213 in her career and trails former standout Trish Watson by only 14 steals for second most in program history.  Watson totaled 227 steals in her career from 2009-2013.
 
* For Trinity, Fossbender and Marlo Simms each scored a game-high 12 points.  Simms also recorded a game-high 15 rebounds to finish the game with a double-double.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Trinity.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 3 as the Nittany Lions resume United East Conference play with a road contest at rival Penn State Harrisburg.  Game time is set for 3 p.m.
