Newman Nets 1,000th Career Point in Victory at Harrisburg

Middletown, Pa. – Penn State Abington senior Nia Newman scored her 1,000th career point as the Nittany Lions defeated Penn State Harrisburg, 80-60, in United East Conference (UEC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Capital Union Building.  The win marked the third victory over Harrisburg in the all-time series and the first-ever double-digit triumph.

How It Happened
 
* Harrisburg owned a 10-point advantage after a three-pointer by Mikayla Coleman made the score 19-9 with less than four minutes to play in the opening quarter.  Abington answered with a 16-0 run and by quarters end had a 25-19 advantage.  Sophomore Xenia Gillis scored eight of the team's 16 points and finished the quarter with 12 points.
 
* Abington continued its run in the second quarter and scored the first 11 points to increase its lead to 36-19 after Gillis scored a layup at the 5:35 mark.  Harrisburg ended the Abington surge with a basket by Molli Hogbin with 4:38 to play in the quarter.  Harrisburg went nearly 10 minutes of game time without a basket.  Abington held on to its double-digit lead at the half with a 38-26 advantage.
 
* In the second half, Abington continued its dominance over Harrisburg not allowing the home team to come within single digits of the lead.  Abington pushed its lead to 24 points (62-38) when sophomore Tramiya Batts scored a basket to close out the third quarter.

* The Abington lead swelled to as many as 32 points twice in the final frame with the latter coming with 5:07 to play in regulation.  Junior Amirah Hackney knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 75-43.
 
* Harrisburg went on a 10-0 run the final 2:30 of the fourth quarter resulting in the 20-point victory for Abington.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Nia Newman entered the game needing just 15 points to reach 1,000 for her career.  She finished the game with exactly that.  Newman scored career points 998, 999 and 1,000 after knocking down a three-pointer with less than a minute to play in the third quarter.  She scored 570 points in her two years at Penn State Lehigh Valley and currently has 430 in one-plus years at Abington. Newman also totaled nine rebounds and had six steals on defense.
 
* Gillis scored a team-high 22 points to go along with 11 rebounds to register her fifth double-double of the season. She shot 7-of-11 from the field, including 8-of-10 from the free throw line.
 
* Hackney finished the game with 15 points and is within striking distance of reaching 1,000 career points.  She'll enter her next game with 978 career points needing just 22 to hit the historic milestone.
 
* Junior Amina Reid recorded her first double-double of the season as she totaled 11 points and a season-high 10 assists; one shy of her career-high.  Reid also had five steals on defense, increasing her career total to 218.  She trails former standout Trish Watson by only nine steals for second most in program history.  Watson recorded 227 career steals from 2009-2013.
 
* For Harrisburg, Mikayla Coleman scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 16th meeting between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011-12 season. Abington is 3-13 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series.

Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 7 as the Nittany Lions host the University of Valley Forge in United East action.  Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Abington Athletic Building.
