Abington Drops Non-Conference Contest to Griffins

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest at Gwynedd Mercy University by the score of 86-70 on Monday evening at The Griffin Complex.

How It Happened
 
* Gwynedd Mercy led by as many as 14 points late in the first half after Bruce Smith scored a basket to make the score 33-19.  Abington cut the lead down to nine points at 35-26 after sophomore Tyler Meinel scored a layup basket at the 3:17 mark.  In the final minute, senior JoJo Kelly knocked down a three to make it a six-point game at 39-33.  Kelly's basket turned out to be the final score of the half.
 
* The Griffins pushed their lead back to double-digits after opening the second half with an 11-2 run. Dylan Harris capped the early surge with a three-pointer that gave the Griffins a 50-35 lead at the 16:36 mark.
 
* Gwynedd Mercy's lead swelled to as many as 22 points past the midway point of the half.  A layup score by Mazen Sayed increased the lead to 69-47.  The Griffins' advantage never dipped below double-digits the rest of the way.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Kelly scored a team-high 20 points to go along with nine rebounds. It marked his fifth straight 20-plus point performance and seventh of the season.
 
* Junior Mike Byfield finished the night with 16 points; only one shy of his season-high.  Byfield shot 6-of-7 from the field and was 3-of-4 from the free throw line.
 
* Meinel filled the box score with nine points, nine rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals.
 
* Junior Tyler Fox added nine points, while fellow junior Tamir Powell finished with seven points.
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, Harris scored a game-high 22 points, while Smith added 11 points.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the fifth meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2019-20 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-4 versus the Griffins in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 11 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Saint Elizabeth University in a non-conference contest.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
