Abington Falls to Gallaudet in United East Action

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team dropped its final home regular season contest of the year against Gallaudet University, 75-63, in United East action on Thursday night at the Abington Athletic Building.  Prior to the game, the Nittany Lions celebrated their senior class with a special pregame ceremony for seniors Sofia Granados and Tori Tolson.

How It Happened
 
* Abington found itself trailing 44-21 at the half after Gallaudet shot over 50-percent from the field, including 5-of-7 from deep range.
 
* In the third quarter the Nittany Lions cut into the 23-point deficit by scoring 22 points in the frame; one more than the entire first half.  Abington cut the Bison lead down to 11 points on two occasions with the latter coming in the final minute-plus.  Senior Tori Tolson made a pair of free throws to make the score 54-43.
 
* The Bison responded with a three-pointer by Crystal Salit and two free throws from Rajena Guettler to push their lead to 58-43 entering the final quarter.
 
* In the fourth, Abington went on a 14-5 run over the first 5:35 of the quarter to come within six points of the Bison lead.  Junior Nia Newman capped the run with a jumper that made the score 63-57.
 
* Later in the quarter the Bison increased their lead back to double-digits at 69-59 with 2:15 to play in regulation.
 
* Abington cut the deficit to single digits (69-61) with less than two minutes to play after a layup basket by junior Naila Newman.  However, Gallaudet held off the Nittany Lions potential comeback connecting on 4-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Nia Newman led the Nittany Lions with 17 points off the bench as she finished one rebound shy of a double-double with a team-high nine boards. 
 
* Tolson finished the night with 12 points and a season-high six steals.  She also had four boards and two assists.
 
* Sophomore Amina Reid also totaled 12 points as she led the team with five assists.
 
* Sophomore Amirah Hackney scored in double-figures with 10 points to go along with seven rebounds and four steals.
 
* For Gallaudet, Guettler registered a double-double with a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds.  She also dished out six assists.  Cam Lexow added 17 points and seven rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 28th meeting between Abington and Gallaudet since the start of the 2011-12 season. The Nittany Lions are now 9-19 versus the Bison in the all-time series.
 
Postseason Picture
With one regular season game left on the schedule the Nittany Lions currently sit tied for second place in the United East with Gallaudet.  However, the Bison own the tie-break over Abington due to their two regular season victories over the Nittany Lions.  Abington can clinch a first-round bye with a win at the University of Valley Forge on Saturday.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 15 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Valley Forge in the regular season finale.  Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
