Abington Clinches First Round Bye with Regular Season Finale Triumph

Phoenixville, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team officially clinched the second seed in next week's United East Conference (UEC) Tournament and a first-round bye after defeating the University of Valley Forge, 83-55, in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at The Pit. The Nittany Lions close out conference play with a 13-3 record.

How It Happened
 
* Abington closed out the final two minutes of the first quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 23-15 lead after freshman Hailey Revak capped the scoring with a three-pointer.  
 
* In the second quarter, Valley Forge scored eight unanswered points to start the quarter and had the game tied 23-23 by the 7:45 mark.  The Patriots held a 31-30 lead with 2:33 remaining until halftime.
 
* Abington scored 10 of the final 12 points of the first half in the final two-plus minutes of the quarter.  Sophomore Amirah Hackney started the run with a three-pointer, while junior Naila Newman hit a three to give the Nittany Lions a 40-33 lead at the half.
 
* In the third quarter the Nittany Lions held the Patriots to just eight points.  Abington led 49-39 with just over five minutes left to play in the quarter.  The team went on a 14-2 surge to hold a 63-41 lead heading into the final frame.  Sophomore Kylie Frey knocked down a pair of threes during the run, along with Revak and sophomore Amina Reid knocking down a shot from deep range.
 
* The Abington lead was too much for the Patriots to overcome as the Nittany Lions led by as many as 32 points. A Frey jumper gave Abington an 80-48 lead with 2:12 to play.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
*  Frey scored a career-high 23 points to lead all scorers.  She knocked down 9-of-17 from the field, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.  Frey also totaled four rebounds and five assists.
 
* Hackney recorded her seventh double-double of the season after finishing the day with 16 points and 14 rebounds; one shy of her career-high. She also had a pair of blocks and one steal on defense.
 
* Reid also scored in double-digits as she finishd with 11 points to go along with four rebounds and nine assists.  Defensively, Reid registered eight of the team's 15 steals in the game.
 
* Revak added nine points, while senior Tori Tolson recorded eight points.
 
* For Valley Forge, Olivia Rochkind and Dominque Barnes each recorded double-doubles.  Rochkind finished with 18 points and 10 boards, while Barnes totaled 16 points and 13 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Valley Forge since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-1 versus the Patriots in the all-time series.
 
Road Warriors
Abington finished the regular season with an impressive 10-1 record on the road.  It marked the team's best road record in the Division III era and the most road victories since finishing 9-3 during the 2014-15 season.
 
Next Up
The Nittany Lions are officially the second seed in next week's United East Tournament.  Abington earned a first-round bye and will now host a quarterfinal contest on Saturday, Feb. 22.  The Nittany Lions will face the winner of the #7 Notre Dame/#10 Wilson first-round match-up.
