Abington Falls to Griffins, 9-6

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team dropped a non-conference contest at Gwynedd Mercy University by the score of 9-6 on Friday afternoon at Frank O. Genuardi Legends Baseball Field.

How It Happened
 
* Abington scored four runs in the top half of the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie in the game.  The first four batters in the inning reached base, including run scoring hits by senior Gaeten Grandelli and sophomore Donato Incollingo who doubled in senior Shane Fillman.  Grandelli would eventually score on a sacrifice fly by senior Jake Fallers and Incollingo gave the Nittany Lions a 6-2 lead after scoring on a double by senior Garrett Garofalo.
 
* In the bottom of the inning, the Griffins answered scoring seven runs in the frame to take a 9-6 lead heading into the ninth.  Gwynedd Mercy took advantage of four defensive errors by the Nittany Lions and also produced six hits in the inning. 
 
* The Nittany Lions were retired in order in the ninth by the Griffins Michael Inglisa who pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win.
 
* Gwynedd Mercy jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but the Nittany Lions got a run back in the second when senior Josh McGee scored on a wild pitch.  McGee reached base earlier in the inning with an infield hit to third.  In the fourth, McGee drove in Grandelli with a base hit to tie the game at 2-2.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Grandelli finished the game 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. 
 
* Garofalo went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles while also driving in a run.
 
* Incollingo and McGee also had a multi-hit game as both players went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
 
* Senior Owen Lynch started the game for the Nittany Lions as he went 6.1 innings allowing just one earned run while striking out three batters.
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, Deven Ross went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Cooper Root finished 2-for-3. Brayden Scott went the first seven innings for the Griffins as he allowed two runs and struck out six.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2012 season. The Nittany Lions are now 4-5 versus the Griffins in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, March 1 as the Nittany Lions face Hobart College in a non-conference neutral site game.  First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Genuardi Field.
