Abington Scores Big Late to Defeat Bison

Auburndale, Fla. – The Penn State Abington baseball team had to wait nearly six hours from the regularly scheduled game time against Bethany College, but the wait was well worth it as the Nittany Lions defeated the Bison, 10-1, on Monday night at the RussMatt Baseball Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park.

Score: Penn State Abington 10, Bethany 1
WP: Derek Aub (1-0) | LP: JT Hubert (0-1)
Records: Penn State Abington (3-6) | Bethany (3-5)
Location: Auburndale, Fla. (Lake Myrtle Park)

How It Happened

* Bethany took the game's first lead in the top half of the third as the Bison took advantage of a two-out throwing error by the Nittany Lions to lead 1-0.

* Starting pitcher, sophomore Nate DeCristofaro, held the Bison to just four hits and one unearned run through the first five innings.  DeCristofaro stifled the Bison's bats as he struck out a career-high nine batters.  Sophomore Derek Aub entered in the sixth inning and pitched three scoreless innings as he struck out three batters.

* The Nittany Lions tied the game in the bottom of the sixth in similar fashion as the Bison did in the first.  With two outs and the bases loaded, senior Shane Fillman hit a grounder to short, which appeared to be an inning ending out, but an errant throw by the Bison's shortstop extended the inning allowing senior Gaetan Grandelli to score from third.

* In the seventh, Abington scored the go-ahead run with two outs in the inning and the bases loaded.  Senior Garrett Garofalo reached on infield hit to shortstop as Grandelli scored to give the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead.

* Abington blew the game wide open in the bottom of the eighth as the Nittany Lions sent 12 batters to the plate that produced seven runs in the innings.  Abington took advantage of two defensive errors in the inning, while connecting on three hits and three free bases via walks and hit by pitches. Four batters drove in runs, including a two-run single by Garofalo.
