Abington Splits with Monks to Close Out Florida Trip

Auburndale, Fla. – The Penn State Abington baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader against St. Joseph's College of Maine on Friday on the final day of the team's Florida trip at the RussMatt Baseball Invitational.  The Nittany Lions took the opener by the score of 7-4, while the Monks were victorious in game two, 10-1.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* A five-run seventh inning turned out to be the difference in the game.  Abington trailed 3-2 entering the final frame and by inning's end held a 7-3 advantage.  Senior Shane Fillman put the Nittany Lions ahead with a two-run double that made the score 4-3.  Later in the inning senior Garrett Garofalo cleared the bases with a three-run two-out double that increased the Nittany Lions' lead to 7-3.
 
* Sophomore James Torpey (1-0) allowed a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh to Nick Villano but settled in and retired the next three batters to record his first career complete game. Torpey went the distance as he struck out a pair of batters and scattered nine hits in seven innings.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Fillman went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
 
* Senior Josh McGee also had a pair of hits in the game as he finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
 
* Junior Paul Figueroa went 2-for-2 with two runs and a walk.
 
* Garofalo drove in a game-high three runs as he went 1-for-4 in the game.
 
* For the Monks, Villano finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, while Ethan Belvin went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Abington scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth when Figueroa drove in senior Gaetan Grandelli with a two-out single to center field.  Grandelli led the inning off with a base hit.
 
* The Nittany Lions' lead was short-lived as St. Joseph's followed with a six-run fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead heading into the latter innings.  Dawson Gundlah highlighted the inning with a three-run double.
 
* The Monks added three more runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Junior Cory DiMario went 2-for-3 with a double, while Garofalo also went 2-for-3 with a pair of hits.
 
* For the Monks, Padraig Seain struck out 10 batters in six innings of work to pick up his first win of the season. Gundlah finished the game 4-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the second and third match-ups between Abington and St. Joseph's with the first coming back in 2022.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-2 versus the Monks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, March 18 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Immaculata University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
