Abington Pitching Stifles Opponent’s Bats in Pair of Victories

Little River, S.C. – The Penn State Abington softball team concluded its Myrtle Beach trip at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with a pair of non-conference victories on Friday at North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex. The Nittany Lions began the day with a 4-1 victory against former United East member SUNY Morrisville and then capped the day with a 4-0 shutout triumph over Martin Luther College. The Abington pitching staff combined for 19 strikeouts and allowed just four hits and one run on the day.

How It Happened (vs. Morrisville)
 
* Abington struck first against the Mustangs as senior Hailey Gamble, fresh off her 100th career hit the day before, delivered a base hit to right field to score sophomore Marlena Hacker to give the Nittany Lions an early 1-0 lead.  Hacker led the game off with a single up the middle.
 
* Two innings later the Mustangs tied the game when Emery Sawitzki drove in Callie Lafontain with a single, which turned out to be Morrisville's lone run.
 
* Abington regained the lead in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-run single by sophomore Isabella Antosiewicz.  Sophomore Ava Livingston and senior Gretchen Yanss connected on back-to-back hits to start the inning.
 
* The Nittany Lions tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth.  Freshman Morgan Craig singled to right-center field to score Hacker.  The run-scoring hit by Craig gave Abington a 4-1 lead.

* Yanss (2-1) picked up her second win of the season and the 30th of her career as she went the distance holding the Mustangs to just two hits and one run.  She also struck out a season-high nine batters. Offensively, Yanss went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
 
* Antosiewicz also had multiple hits in the game as she went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
 
* Hacker finished 1-for-2 with two runs and a stolen base.
 
* For Morrisville, Lafontain and Sawitzki each recorded a hit.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the seventh meeting between Abington and Morrisville since the start fo the 2021 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 7-0 versus the Mustangs.
 
How It Happened (vs. Martin Luther)
 
* Abington supplied its pitchers all the offense they would need in the second inning. The Nittany Lions scored four runs in the inning with Hacker, Craig and Gamble all driving in a run. 
 
*  Freshman Jess Dinardo and sophomore Paula Casale took care of the rest as the two combined for the shutout.  Dinardo earned her first collegiate victory as she allowed just two hits in four innings of work.  She struck out a season-high six batters.  Casale pitched three perfect innings of relief to record the save, the first of her career.  She also fanned three batters.
 
Inside the Box Score (vs. Martin Luther)
 
* Junior Emily Foxhill went 2-for-2 in the game with a walk.  She also scored a run and stole a base.
 
* Sophomore Rylee Albany finished 2-for-3 with a run. 
 
* Gamble also had a pair of hits in the game as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
 
* For the Knights, Amelia Thiel and and Chloe Koschnitzke each had a hit in the game.

Abington returns to action on Tuesday, March 18 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Immaculata University in a non-conference doubleheader.  Game time is set for 3 p.m.
