Abington Splits with Mighty Macs

Immaculata, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Immaculata University on Tuesday afternoon at the IU Softball Field.  The Mighty Macs took the opener by the score 7-1.  However, the Nittany Lions bounced back in back two with a 9-7 triumph.  The second game was called after five innings due to darkness.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington jumped out to a 1-0 lead after sophomore Marlena Hacker led the game off with a home run over the left field fence.  It marked Hacker's first collegiate long ball.
 
* The Nittany Lions' lead would be short-lived as the Mighty Macs tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Rylee Martin drove in a run with a double to left field.
 
* In the third, Immaculata grabbed a 2-1 advantage when Martin drove in her second run of the game.  The Mighty Macs added three runs in the fourth to make it a 5-1 game.
 
* Martin capped the scoring in the sixth when she connected on a two-run homer.  She finished the game 3-for-4 with a run and four RBI.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Hacker went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  As beforehand mentioned, her first inning homer marked her first collegiate home run. Hacker also stole a base.
 
* Freshman Morgan Craig registered a pair of hits for the Nittany Lions as she finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk.
 
* Senior Gretchen Yanss (2-2) recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts; one shy of her career-high, in seven innings of work.
 
* For Immaculata, Emma Mercadant (3-0) picked up her third win of the season as she struck out six batters and held the Nittany Lions to one run in a complete game effort.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, it was Immaculata that jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Jess Oldham hit a first inning solo home run.
 
* Abington quickly responded with three runs in the top half of the second to take a 3-1 lead.  Sophomores Isabella Antosiewicz and Rylee Albany recorded back-to-back run scoring hits before junior Emily Foxhill drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
 
* Junior Jill Thomas connected on a two-out two-run double in third to extend the Abington lead to 5-1.
 
* The Mighty Macs rallied with three runs in the bottom of the third to come within one run of the Abington lead at 5-4.  Oldham led the inning off with her second home run of the game. Later in the inning, Immaculata added another two runs after taking advantage of an Abington fielding error. 
 
* In the top half of the fourth the three runs previously scored by Immaculata were erased when Hacker launched a three-run homer down the left field line.  Albany, who reached on a hit by pitch, and Foxhill, who singled, scored on the play.
 
* Oldham struck again for the Mighty Macs in the bottom of the fourth as she hit her third home run of the game; this time a two-run homer that made the score 8-6.
 
* In the top half of the fifth, Yanss pinch-hit to lead off the inning and homered over the center field fence to give the Nittany Lions a 9-6 lead.  For Yanss, it marked her first collegiate home run.
 
* The Mighty Macs tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 9-7 when Oldham drew a bases loaded walk.  After the final out was recorded, the game was called due to darkness.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Hacker went 1-for-4 in the game with a run scored and three RBI.  Her fourth inning homer was the second of the doubleheader for her as well as her second career home run.
 
* Senior Hailey Gamble went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
 
* Thomas also had multiple hits in the game as she finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
 
* Yanss, in her only plate appearance, hit her first career home run.  It was also her 96th career hit as she is now four hits shy of the 100-hits milestone.
 
* For Immaculata, Oldham finished 3-for-3 with three home runs which resulted in three runs scored and five RBI. Naila Valdez went 3-for-3 with a run scored.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fourth and fifth matchup between Abington and Immaculata since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-3 versus the Mighty Macs in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday, March 20 as the Nittany Lions host Marymount University in the team's home opener.  Game one is set for 2 p.m. at Huntingdon Field.
