Yanss Records 100th Career Hit Against Saints

Abington, Pa. – Senior Gretchen Yanss recorded her 100th career hit as the Penn State Abington softball team hosted Marymount University in the team's home opener on Thursday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  The Saints defeated the Nittany Lions, 3-1 and 7-4, in the non-conference twin bill.
 
Yanss is the seventh player in program history to reach the 100 hit milestone and is the second player in the last week to do so joining teammate Hailey Gamble who recorded her 100th hit last Thursday.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
*   The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Marymount broke through with the game's first two runs.  With two outs in the inning, Kaylee Atkins doubled to left-center field to drive in a pair of runs and give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
 
* Abington got on the board in the bottom of the fifth.  Sophomore Marlena Hacker recorded a base hit to left that scored freshman Celeste Chang to make the score 2-1.  Chang pinch ran for junior Jill Thomas who led the inning off with a walk. 
 
* The Saints added an insurance run in the seventh after Samantha Cinotti scored Leila Hernandez with a sacrifice fly. 
 
* Bailey Demusz retired the Nittany Lions in order in the seventh to close out the complete game performance.  Demusz scattered five hits in seven innings while striking out seven batters.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Yanss went 2-for-3 at the plate as she recorded career hits 97 and 98.  She also went the distance in the pitching circle and was the pitcher of record for the Nittany Lions.  She allowed two earned runs and struck out a pair of batters.
 
* Gamble went 1-for-3 with a double, while Hacker (1-3) and freshman Morgan Craig (1-3) each had base hits in the game.
 
* For Marymount, Atkins finished 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI, while Hernandez went 2-for-4.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
*  In game two, the Saints opened with three runs in the top half of the first inning.  Atkins drew a bases loaded walk before Ashleigh Mannion drove in a pair with a base hit to center field.
 
* Abington got on the board in the third when Hacker scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-1.  One inning later Hacker drove in Thomas and sophomore Rylee Albany with a two-out double to left-center field to tie the game at 3-3.  Thomas and Albany started the inning with back-to-back walks.
 
* Marymount answered in the top of the fifth with two runs to regain the lead at 5-3.  Atkins drove in a run with a groundout, while Cinotti scored later in the inning off an Abington fielding error.
 
* In the bottom of the inning the Nittany Lions got one of the runs back to cut the deficit down to 5-4.  Yanss delivered a base hit to left field, which turned out to be her 100th career hit.  The ball got by the left fielder allowing freshman Lainey Scotese to score from first.
 
* Marymount added two additional runs in the top half of the sixth to cap the scoring. Cinotti recorded a two-run single to make the score 7-4.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Yanss finished the game 2-for-4 and was 4-for-7 on the day as she became the seventh player in program history to record 100 career hits.  Her milestone hit came in the bottom of the fifth with a base hit to left field.  Yanss, the program's all-time leader in strikeouts, is just one of two players in program history to record 300 career strikeouts and 100 career hits.  Former standout Becca Dougherty is the other who accomplished the same feat during her four-year career (2016-19).
 
* Hacker finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
 
* Albany also had a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-2 with a run and walk. 
 
* For Marymount, Cinotti went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.  Demusz, who started game one, entered the game early in the fourth inning in relief.  She pitched four innings allowing just one unearned run while striking out four.  Demusz earned the win, her third of the season.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Marymount.

Abington returns to action on Saturday, March 22 as the Nittany Lions host Neumann University in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one is set for 1 p.m.
