Abington Blanks DeSales, 7-0

Center Valley, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team improved to 4-0 after defeating DeSales University, 7-0, in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon at the DeSales Tennis Courts.  The 4-0 start by the Nittany Lions is their best start to a season in the program's Division III era.

How It Happened
 
* Abington took all three doubles competitions to earn the doubles point in the match.  The duo of Wenxu Gu and Krishna Gurram trailed their first doubles match versus Jatin Prabhakar and Reece Stein, 5-4, before winning the match 7-5. 
 
* At second doubles, Tripp Mangifesta and Anton Labas got the win over Brent Holzman and Zachary Marshall by the score of 7-5. Mangifesta and Labas scored the final two points after the match was tied five all.
 
* The Nittany Lions cruised to a 6-2 triumph at third doubles as Trivikram Chitturi and Ulrich Commodore defeated DeSales' Frank Boffa and Nicholas Ofak.
 
* Gu grabbed the win at first singles over Prabhakar.  He took the first set with ease, 6-2, and then went the distance in the second set.  Gu won the tiebreak in the set, 7-3, to take the second set by the score of 7-6. 
 
* Gurram won his second singles match against Holzman in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
 
* Mangifesta bounced back against Reece Stein at third singles after dropping the first set, 6-4.  Mangifesta won the second set, 6-4, and went on to win the tie-break, 11-9. He led the tiebreaker, 9-5 before Stein tied things up at 9-9.  However, Mangifesta won the next two points to seal the victory.
 
* In fourth singles, Labas pulled out the win over Marshall.  He took the first set 6-3 and rallied in the second set to take the match.  Labas trailed 5-2 in the set and went on to win five straight games to take the set, 7-5.
 
* Chitturi got the win at fifth singles over Christopher Gomez winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
 
* Mark Tymchenko rallied to take the point at sixth singles.  Boffa won the first set, 6-1, before Tymchenko tied the match with a 6-3 win in the second set.  He went on to take the match with a 10-5 triumph in the tiebreaker.

Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and DeSales.

Abington returns to action on Saturday, March 22 as the Nittany Lions open United East play with a match at Lancaster Bible College.  Match time is set for 3 p.m.
