Abington Opens Conference Play with Shutout at LBC

Landisville, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team improved to 5-0 on the year, but more importantly opened United East Conference (UEC) play with a 7-0 shutout victory at Lancaster Bible College on Saturday afternoon at the Hempfield Rec Center.
 
How It Happened
 
* Abington grabbed the team point in doubles after winning two of the three competitions.   At first doubles, sophomores Wenxu Gu and Tripp Mangifesta defeated Josh Jarvis and Cameron Tripp by the score of 6-3, while sophomore Anton Labas and freshman Charlie Batman shutout the Chargers' Austin King and Andrew Kelly, 6-0, at third doubles. 
 
* In singles play, Gu shutout Jarvis at the first flight by score of 6-0, 6-0.
 
* Mangifesta cruised to victory at second singles against Tripp by winning by identical 6-2 scores in each set.
 
* At third singles, Labas went the distance against Owen Mileham.  He won the first set, 6-2, by Mileham tied the match with a 7-5 victory in the second set.  Labas trailed 3-2 in the third set but bounced back to take a 5-3 advantage.  He went on to take the set, 6-4,  and the match.
 
* Sophomore Trivikram Chitturi won his fourth singles victory against Cole Scheihing in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.
 
* Sophomore Lucca Frederico finished off Austin King at fifth singles by the scores of 6-2, 6-3, while Ulrich Commodore won his first collegiate singles match with a straight set victory over Kelly.  Commodore won, 6-0 and 6-3.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 15th meeting between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 9-6 versus the Chargers in the all-time series. 
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, March 26 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Arcadia University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 3 p.m.
