Abington Opens Spring with Win Over Lions

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team improved to 3-0 overall after defeating Albright College, 5-2, in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.  The 3-0 start by the Nittany Lions is their best since 2011-12 when the team also went 3-0 to open the season.

How It Happened
 
* Abington won five of the six singles matches to earn the win.  Sophomore Wenxu Gu won his first singles match over Adam Good, 6-3, 6-2. 
 
* At second singles, freshman Krishna Gurram bounced back after dropping the first set to Dylan Huha, 6-3.  Gurram tied the match with a 6-2 triumph in the second set to force a tiebreak.  In the tiebreak, Gurram took an 8-2 lead and held off a rally by Huha to win the tiebreak, 10-8.
 
* Sophomore Tripp Mangifesta also rallied in his third singles match after dropping the first set to Gerardo Sanchez, 6-0.  Mangifesta cruised to a 6-2 victory in set two to tie the match.  In the tie-break, Mangifesta trailed 4-1, 5-2 and 6-3.  He took three straight points to tie the score at 6-6.  The score would be tied two more times at 7-7 and 8-8 before Mangifesta took the final two points for a 10-8 win.
 
* In fourth singles, sophomore Anton Labas defeated Nikolai Damman, 6-3, 3-6, and 11-9.  Labas trailed 6-3 and 7-4 and faced three match points at 9-6.  However, he countered each won and won the next two points to take the tie-breaker, 11-9.
 
* Sophomore Trivikram Chitturi won his first collegiate match as he defeated Timo Weber 6-1, 6-4 at sixth singles.
 
* Albright earned its lone point in singles play at fifth flight after Clay Lewandowski won in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6.  The Lions also earned the point after doubles competitions by sweeping all three matches.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 12th meeting between Abington and Albright since the start of the 2011-12 season. The Nittany Lions are now 6-6 versus the Lions in the all-time series.  The win marked Abington's first over Albright since 2018.

Abington returns to action on Wednesday, March 12 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Mary Baldwin University in a non-conference contest. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
