Abington Drops Doubleheader to Knights

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Neumann University on Saturday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  The Knights took game one by the score of 8-7 in nine innings and went on to win game two, 13-9, to complete the sweep.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Down to their last out, the Nittany Lions scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4.  Junior Jill Thomas delivered a base hit to center field that scored freshmen Celeste Chang and  Lainey Scotese to send the game into extra innings.
 
* Both teams scored single runs in the eighth to force another inning of action.  In the ninth, the Knights pushed across three runs to take an 8-5 lead off three extra-base hits.
 
* In the bottom of the ninth, Scotese drove in senior Hailey Gamble with a double to left field before scoring herself later in the inning on a wild pitch.  Senior Callie Chambers drew a walk after Scotese scored to make the score 8-7.  However, Chambers would be stranded on the base paths as Sydney Wright retired the final two batters of the inning to close out the game.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Gamble and Scotese each recorded three hits in the game for the Nittany Lions.  Gamble finished 3-for-5 with a double and two runs, while Scotese went 3-for-4 with two doubles.  She also scored twice and drove in a run.
 
* Thomas also had multiple hits in the game as she went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
 
* Senior Gretchen Yans went 2-for-5 at the plate with an RBI.  She also pitched a complete nine inning game and was the pitcher of record for the Nittany Lions.
 
* For Neumann, Alexis Palombi went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.  Marina Costello started the game for the Knights as she went six-plus innings while striking out nine batters. She also went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
*  Abington scored the game's first two runs in the bottom of the second.  Junior Emily Foxhill and freshman Morgan Craig each drove in runs in the inning. 
 
* The Abington lead didn't last long as Neumann responded with four runs in the top half of the third. Faith Weaver highlighted the inning with a two-run triple.
 
* The Nittany Lions responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the third to regain the lead at 6-4.  Chambers and Thomas recorded back-to-back run scoring doubles that made it a 5-4 game.  Foxhill extended the lead to 6-4 when a bunt single scored Thomas from third.
 
* The Knights took advantage of two fielding errors in the top half of the fourth that helped push across two runs to tie the game at 6-6.
 
* Neumann followed with a five-run fifth inning extending its lead to 11-6.  Tori Spinella had a two-run single in the inning.
 
* Abington cut the deficit to 11-9 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Freshman Riley Logan entered as a pinch-hitter and recorded her first career hit with a base hit to center field that drove in Thomas and Chang.  Logan later scored on a double by sophomore Ryley Albany.
 
* In the seventh, the Knights tacked on two insurance runs.  Neumann capitalized on a bases loaded walk followed by a fielding error to increase its lead to 13-9.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Thomas finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI.  She finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 with two doubles and four RBI.
 
* Foxhill went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Yanss went 2-for-4 with two runs.
 
* For Neumann, Cioni Simmons went 3-for-5 with three runs, while Spinella finished 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Ang Sannicand pitched three scoreless innings to earn the save.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth and 10th matchups between Abington and Neumann since the start of the 2021 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-9 versus the Knights in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, March 25 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Stockton University in a non-conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 2:30 p.m.
