Abington Splits with Wildcats to Open United East Play

Jenkintown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team split its first United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader of the year against visiting Penn College on Saturday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park. The Nittany Lions took the opener with a 16-10 decision, while the Wildcats won game two by the score of 8-5.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington trailed 4-2 entering the bottom of the third.  By the time the inning was over, the Nittany Lions held a 6-4 advantage.  Abington scored four runs in the inning, including an RBI double by sophomore Donato Incollingo who then scored on a two-run homer by senior Jake Fallers.
 
* The Abington offense continued in the fourth when the Nittany Lions added five more runs to take an 11-5 lead.  Senior Gaetan Grandelli hit a solo home run to get the scoring going.  Three batters later, senior Josh McGee drove in Incollingo and Fallers with a two-run double.  Junior Paul Figueroa and Julien Grandelli had back-to-back two-out run scoring hits to cap the scoring in the inning.
 
* The Wildcats cut the deficit to 12-9 with three runs in the seventh.  Levi Purnell and Jaydon Goebel each homered in the inning.
 
* Abington answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.  McGee highlighted the inning with a two-run single to give the Nittany Lions a 15-9 lead.
 
* The Nittany Lions scored again in the eighth when Fallers scored junior Cory DiMario with a sacrifice fly.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Gaetan Grandelli finished the game 4-for-5 with four runs and one RBI.  His fourth inning home run marked his second of the season.
 
* Incollingo went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs and three RBI. 
 
* Fallers finished 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.  His third inning home run marked his third on the year.
 
* McGee went 3-for-6 with two runs and four RBI.
 
* For Penn College, Brandon Shane and Nathan Gustkey each went 3-for-5 at the plate.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* The Wildcats scored the game's first five runs, including four in the top half of the third to take an early 5-0 lead.  Shane capped the scoring in the third with a two-run single.
 
* Abington came within two runs of the lead in the bottom of the third when Incollingo launched a three-run homer over the left-center field fence.  His fifth home run of the season made the score 5-3.
 
* The Wildcats extended their lead to 6-3 in the fourth when a fielding error by the Nittany Lions led to a run.
 
* In the sixth, the Nittany Lions once again cut the deficit to two runs after Julian Grandelli scored senior Garrett Garofalo with a two-out double to make the score 6-4.
 
* Gustkey and Purnell each had back-to-back run scoring hits in the seventh.  Purnell's sacrifice fly made the score 8-4.
 
* The Abington offense capped the scoring in the game with a single run in the eighth.  Senior Shane Fillman had an RBI single in the inning.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Incollingo finished the game 3-for-4 with one run and three RBI.  His third inning homer marked his fifth of the season and 12th of his career. Incollingo finished the doubleheader 7-for-9 with six RBI and four runs scored.
 
* McGee and Fillman each finished 2-for-5 at the plate.
 
* Senior Nate Evans pitched two scoreless innings of relief without allowing a hit and striking out one batter.
 
* For Penn College, Gustkey went 4-for-6 , while Shane went 3-for-5 with two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 31st and 32nd matchups between Abington and Penn College.  The Nittany Lions are now 20-12 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.

Abington returns to action on Tuesday, March 25 as the Nittany Lions host nationally ranked #13 Rowan University in a non-conference contest.  First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
