Abington Defeats Knights for Sixth Straight Win

Glenside, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team extended its season-long six-match winning streak to start the season after defeating Arcadia University, 5-2, in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon at Weiss Courts.
 
How It Happened
 
* Arcadia took the point in doubles after winning first and second flights.  The Nittany Lions won at third doubles as the team of Trivikram Chitturi and Ulrich Commodore rallied to defeat Jaylen Ferguson and Leo Dupont.  Chitturi and Commodore trailed 5-2 in the match but rallied by scoring five of the next seven points to take the competition at 7-5.
 
* At first singles, Wenxu Gu, the United East Player of the Week, defeated Aaron Allen in three sets.  Gu won the first set, 6-1, before Allen tied the match with a 6-0 victory in set two.  In the tiebreak, Gu scored the first four points on his way to a 10-1 victory to take the match.
 
* Krishna Gurram went the distance against Kevin McHale.  Gurram won the first set, 7-6, and after falling in the second set, won the tiebreak by the score of 10-5.  Gurram led 5-4 in the tiebreak and won four straight points to grab a 9-4 lead.
 
* Tripp Mangifesta also went the distance in his third singles match against Cole Goodman-Gary.  Mangifesta won the first set, 6-4, while Goodman-Gary won the second set, 7-6.  In the tiebreak, Mangifesta trailed 5-1 before rallying to take a 7-6 lead.  With the tiebreak tied at 10-10, Mangifesta won the next two points to clinch the win.
 
* Lucca Frederico won the team's fourth third set tiebreak of the match.  Frederica won the first set, 7-6, before David Cassel took the second set, 6-4.  Frederico led the tiebreak, 7-2, but Cassel tied the set at 7-7 and again at 8-8.  However, Frederico took the next two points to win the tiebreak, 10-8.
 
* At fourth singles, Anton Labas won his match against Lee Conlu in straight sets by the score of 6-2 and 6-3.  Labas' win clinched the match for the Nittany Lions.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth meeting between Abington and Arcadia since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 7-2 versus the Knights in the all-time series.

Abington returns to action on Friday, March 28 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Cairn University in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 3 p.m.
