Abington Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader at Stockton

Galloway, N.J. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Stockton University on Tuesday afternoon at Stockton Field.  The Osprey defeated the Nittany Lions by the scores of 11-3 and 8-1.

How It Happened (Game 1)

* Stockton's Nerina Tramp (5-2) had plenty of run support as she picked up her fifth win of the season.  In a complete six-inning game, Tramp struck out 10 and held Abington to three runs on six hits.
 
* Stockton jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the opening frame.  The Osprey went on to score runs in every inning except for the second inning.
 
* Abington broke up Stockton's shutout bid in the top half of the sixth with a three-run inning.  Senior Gretchen Yanss, junior Jill Thomas and freshman Lainey Scotese all had run-scoring hits in the inning.
 
* The Osprey responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, including a three-run homer by Emily Spencer.  Stockton enforced the mercy rule when Elizabeth Martin drove in a run with a base hit with one out in the inning.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Scotese finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with a run and an RBI. 
 
* Senior Hailey Gamble went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored.
 
* Yanss and Thomas each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
 
* For Stockton, Spencer finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Scotese gave Abington an early 1-0 lead as she drove home sophomore Ryley Albany in the first inning.
 
* The Nittany Lion lead didn't last long as Stockton three runs in both the first and second innings to lead 6-0 after two.
 
* The score remained 6-1 until the bottom of the sixth when the Osprey tacked on two more runs to make it an 8-1 game.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Gamble, Scotese, Yanss and freshman Logan Riley all went 1-for-3 in the game.
 
* For Stockton, McKenna George went 2-for-4 with two runs, while Charli Czaczkowski reached base three times with three walks.  Czaczkowski also scored twice. Mia Barone (2-0) picked up the win with four scoreless innings of relief.

Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Stockton.

Abington returns to action on Wednesday, March 26 as the Nittany Lions welcome Gwynedd Mercy University to Huntingdon Field for a non-conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
