Abington Splits with Gwynedd Mercy

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  The Griffins took game one by the score of 5-4 in eight innings before the Nittany Lions closed out the doubleheader with a 6-4 triumph in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Freshman Lainey Scotese came through with a clutch two-out triple that cleared the bases to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
 
* In the bottom of the seventh, the Nittany Lions trailed 4-3 after the Griffins regained the lead in the top half of the inning.  Scotese once again delivered a game-tying hit with two outs in the frame to force extra innings.
 
* In the top half of the eight, Gwynedd Mercy's Maya Hellyer pushed across what turned out to be the game-winning run with a base hit to right field.
 
* In the bottom of the eighth, the Nittany Lions had the tying run at third with one out in the inning.  However, the Griffins' Jocelyn Baumeister retired the final two batters to close out the game.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Scotese finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in all four runs as she recorded a season-high four RBI. 
 
* Senior Hailey Gamble also went 2-for-4, while fellow senior Gretchen Yanss went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run. 
 
* Sophomore Rylee Albany reached base twice as she drew two walks and scored a run.
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, Shylynn Cordero went 3-for-4 with a double and runs scored.  Hannah Cohen finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Baumeister (3-5) picked up her third win of the season after going the distance as she struck out seven batters.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Abington trailed 4-2 late in game two, but another clutch bases clearing hit on the day gave the Nittany Lions a 5-4 advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning.  This time it was junior Jill Thomas who laced a shot down the left field line to drive in three runs to give Abington a one-run lead.
 
* The Nittany Lions added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.  Yanss drove in junior Emily Foxhill with a double to center field to make the score 6-4.  However, the run turned out to be not needed after all as the game was called after the inning due to darkness.
 
* Abington scored the game's first two runs with single runs in the first and second.  Yanss drove in Gamble with a double in the first inning, while sophomore Isabella Antosiewicz scored freshman Riley Logan with a base hit.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Thomas went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI.
 
* Yanss also had multiple hits as she finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
 
* Freshman Craig Morgan finished the game 2-for-3 with a run.
 
* Sophomore Paula Casale (1-3) earned her first win of the season after pitching three innings of relief.
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, Cordero finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Baumeister went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fifth and sixth matchups between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2018 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-4 versus the Griffins in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, March 29 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Saint Elizabeth University in the team's first United East Conference doubleheader of the season.  Game one is set for 1 p.m.
