Abington Shuts Out Falcons on Senior Day

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team picked up its first United East Conference (UEC) victory of the season after defeating visiting Cedar Crest College, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon during Senior Day.  Prior to the match, the team honored senior Isabella DePorre who was competing in one of her final regular season contests at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.

How It Happened
 
* Abington earned the team point in doubles after winning first and second flights.  DePorre and sophomore Laurie Flemming won their first doubles match with ease by the score of 6-0.  In second doubles, juniors Morgan Schaefer and Soniyah Youngblood came away with a 6-3 victory. 
 
* Flemming improved to 5-1 on the year at first doubles after cruising to a straight sets victory against Raury Barnard by identical 6-1 scores.
 
* DePorre also won with ease as she defeated Corinne O'Connor in straight sets at second singles.  DePorre won by the scores of 6-0 and 6-1.  The singles victory marked her 30th career win combined with doubles.
 
* Youngblood rallied in her third singles match against Grace Huff.  After dropping the first set, 6-4, Youngblood bounced back with a 6-3 victory in the second set to force a third set tiebreak.  Youngblood trailed the tiebreak, 8-7 but went on to win the next three games to take the set, 10-8.
 
* Schaefer picked up the win at fourth singles as she defeated Cam Beverage in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2.
 
* At fifth singles, freshman Maman Saly Mbengue also won in straight sets against Gracelynn Pauley.  Mbengue won the first set, 6-2, and then shutout Pauley in the second set, 6-0, to take the win.
 
* Sophomore Sevara Tursunboeva won her first collegiate match after defeating Aleice Cherry in straight sets at sixth singles.  Tursunboeva won by the scores of 6-1 and 6-3.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Cedar Crest since the start of the 2011-12 season and the first since 2013-14.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-1 versus the Falcons in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Sunday, March 30 as the Nittany Lions host McDaniel College in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 11 a.m.
