Abington Defeats McDaniel, 5-2

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team won its second match in as many days to improve to 4-4 on the year after defeating visiting McDaniel College, 5-2, in a non-conference contest on Sunday morning at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.

How It Happened
 
* Abington jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match after claiming the team point after taking first and second doubles.  Senior Isabella DePorre and sophomore Laurie Flemming picked up the win at first doubles by the score of 6-3, while juniors Morgan Schaefer and Soniyah Youngblood cruised to a 6-1 victory at second doubles.
 
* In singles action, Flemming went the distance with McDaniel's Stephanie Buttons at first flight.  Flemming won the first set by the score of 6-4 before Buttons took the second set by the same score.  In the third set tiebreak, Flemming trailed 6-2 but won three straight games to come within one point of tying the set.  Buttons increased her lead to 7-5, however Flemming bounced back and won five straight points to take the set, 10-7.  Flemming is now 6-1 at first singles this year and has won four straight matches.
 
* DePorre earned the win at second singles after defeating Lil Overcash in straight sets by the scores of 6-3, 7-6.
 
* At third singles, Youngblood cruised to a straight sets victory over Mackenzie McCarter.  Youngblood shut her out in the first set, 6-0, and took the second set by the score of 6-1. 
 
* Schaefer got the win at fourth singles after defeating Nakayla Lawson in straight sets by the scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
 
* McDaniel earned points with victories at fifth and sixth singles.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and McDaniel since the start of the 2019-20 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-0 versus the Green Terror in the all-time series.

Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 1 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Bryn Athyn College in United East Conference action.  Match time is set for 3 p.m.
