Abington Defeats McDaniel for Eighth Straight Victory

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team has now won eighth straight matches to start the season after defeating McDaniel College, 5-2, in a non-conference contest on Sunday morning at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.  The victory marked a significant milestone in the program's Division III era as it was the team's eighth straight win tying the 2014-15 team with the longest in-season winning streak.

How It Happened
 
* Abington won the team point in doubles competitions after claiming victories at first and second flights.  The team of sophomores Wenxu Gu and Tripp Mangifesta defeated Jake Kegley and Connor Neal at first doubles by the score of 6-3, while the duo of sophomore Trivikram Chitturi and freshman Krishna Gurram won by the same score over Parth Shan and Quinn Dietsche at second doubles.
 
* In singles play, Mangifesta won his second singles match against Neal in straight sets by the scores of 6-3 and 6-1.  Mangifesta is now 8-0 this season in singles play, including 3-0 at second flight.
 
* Sophomore Anton Labas improved to 7-1 on the year in singles after defeating Dietsche at third flight, 7-5 and 6-4.  Labas is now 3-0 in that position this season.
 
* Chitturi nearly pulled off the shutout at fourth singles as he defeated Drew Ryder in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, at fourth singles.
 
* At fifth singles, sophomore Lucca Frederico remained undefeated in singles play with an 8-2 victory over Parth Shah.  Frederico is 2-0 this season at fifth singles.
 
* McDaniel picked up victories at first and sixth singles.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and McDaniel since the start of the 2019-20 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-1 versus the Green Terror.
 
Streaking Lions Continue
Abington has now won eight straight matches and is one victory shy of holding the longest winning streak in the program's Division III history. 
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, April 5 as the Nittany Lions host Penn College in United East Conference (UEC) action.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
